11.2... Johann Georg Schömbs (*17.12.1799 Hahnheim, +15.091860 Brooklyn NY)
Johann Georg Schömbs married Theresia Horn (*1810). Johann Georg Schömbs was by profession a butcher. While Georg and Theresia lived primarily in Hahnheim, they may have had a short stay in Laubenheim. Their first child Anna Maria was documented as being born in Laubenheim. In 1846 Johann Georg made application to emigrate to Brazil with his wife and children. After receiving permission, however, they emigrated to Algeria. Their stay in Algeria lasted only about a year, when they returned to Germany. Then in 1848 they emigrated again, this time to Amerika and settled in Brooklyn, New York. In Amerika they had two more children.

It was through researching the birth of their eighth child Philipp (*1848 Brooklyn NY) and discovering that his parents were Johann Georg and Theresia Schömbs that ultimately the travels of Johann Georg and his family were determined. Johann Georg followed the example of several of the Wahlheimer Schömbs and changed his name to "James" in Amerika. This is first noted in the 1860 U.S. Census. And if the Census information is to be believed, they kept it as James for twenty or more years. But later at least their son 9.8 Philipp changed it again to Schombs, first seen in the 1892 New York State Census. This followed the example of Henry Schömbs (*1829 Monzernheim) who had emigrated in about 1854 and changed his name to "Schombs". They were probably in contact with one another in New York City. They are the only two emigrants known to have used the "Schombs" spelling.

Philipp Schömbs was a master butcher and a farmer. He supplied his meats and sausages to canteens and other restaurants in Mainz and its surroundings.

Philipp was politically active in the Center party and became Mayor in 1928 in his hometown Hahnheim. In 1933 he was persecuted by the Nazis, since he did not comply with their practices and was sent to a detention camp at Osthofen. From the abuse he received there he lost his hearing. In 1945, under the auspices of the American occupation, he was re-installed in the position of Mayor and served another year.

His many years of service to the community were recognized in 1983 when a street near the railroad station was named in his honor. (See Chapter A – Ancestry of the Family -- for the picture and newspaper article -- "Philipp Schömbs-Straße" in Hahnheim). On his gravestone he is given the title "Altbürgermeister", or Old Mayor.

Based upon the Census information on the births of their children, they may have lived in Kentucky and perhaps Ohio before settling down in Evansville, Indiana.

Martin Schömbs                      Elisabeth Klassert
Martin Schoembs was a teacher by profession. He was first active as a Vikar in the Church in Gonsenheim, and came in 1847 as a young teacher to the hessian community of Urberach (today the district of Rödermark). There he became the "First Teacher" or headmaster over a school of about 350 children. In the parish chronicle of Urberach, later published on 28.10.1971 in the community newsletter, the prestige of the teachers had been previously tarnished by the godless school-vicar Sottoskasa, who had emigrated from Gonsenheim to America. He was replaced by Martinus Schoembs, born in Hahnheim and now Vikar in Gonsenheim, who restored the position and brought a new spirit into the school and community. "His elegant character and his zeal were acknowledged everywhere." He also served as the church organist and loyal helper of the priest, including helping with each burial and signing his name beside the priest in the record. In the later years he began using the spelling Schömbs.

Besides Martin there were three other teachers active in the school. In 1855 a female tradeschool became affiliated, which taught young girls hand crafts. The leading woman of the school soon became the wife of Martin – Frau Schömbs.

Adam Schömbs followed in his father's footsteps, both as organist and teacher, replacing Martin as Headmaster in 1901. Adam began with the school in 1870 and worked there until his retirement in 1919. He served the school and community in the same faultless manner as had Martin and was very involved in the cultural life in Urberach. In memory of the service of Martin and Adam Schömbs, the community of Urberach in 1925 named a street after them which exists to this day, Schömbs-Straße (see Chapter A – Ancestry of the Family -- for the press article.

It is interesting to note that the two streets named for Schömbs (including the spelling variations) in Germany, both go back to the men from Hahnheim.

The special merits and contributions to the Urberach School by Adam Schömbs were acknowledged by a colleague Roßkopf in the following poem written for his retirement.

Johannes Schömbs was married in 1810 in Hahnheim to Anna Maria Neumer. They lived in Friesenheim. Some documentation gives his date of birth differently than as shown above. The marriage document below from the year 1810 states his age as 24 years and 10 months, which would yield a birthyear of 1785. The record of his son Heinrich's marriage in 1848 gives Johannes as being 65 years old, or a birthyear of 1783. Such inconsistencies of data in genealogical records is not atypical, particularly in records prior to the 19th Century.

Johannes Schömbs Marriage Record 1810
Translation of the 1810 Marriage Record for Johannes Schömbs:

(jds Note: this was the period of occupation of the Pfalz by the French. Notice that the given name has been recorded as Jean, rather than Johann. Jean is the French equivalent of Johann – or John in English.)

In the year 1810, on the 14th day of the month January, at the hour of "Alutin", before us appeared the Mayor of the community of Selzen, official of the Hahnheim area, canton of Oppenheim, Department of Mont-Tonnerre.

Jean Schoembs, age 24 years and 10 months, farmer, resident of Hahnheim, son of Nicola Schoembs, 61 years of age, and Catharine, nee Zang, is married in the residence at Wahlheimer Hof, district of Hahnheim.

And Anna Marie Neumer, .............., daughter of Jean Guillemus Neumer, 52 years old, farmer, resident of Friesenheim Wörrstadt, registry office Gabsheim, canton Wörrstadt, and Catharina ..........

They ask us to plan the wedding of the two, and that this has been already submitted in writing to the Mayor, first told to me on the 1st day of the month January of the year 1810 at 10 o'clock in the morning.

After the two have been taught, and reminded from the Civil Laws book, Chapter VI, they have agreed to the wedding for which the two have asked to be united as husband and wife. Both have separately approved and with their signatures signed, so that Jean Schoembs and Anna Marie Neumer now in their marriage are united.

Thus it is recorded in the presence of Nicolas Schoembs, age 61, resident of Wahlheimer Hof and Jean Guillaume Neumeier, 52 years old, farmer, resident of Friesenheim Wörrstadt, registry office Gabsheim, canton Wörrstadt, after the reading the involved parties have signed a contract with us and it is held.
