The Story of Valentin Schönhardt (*1808 Mommenheim, +1878 Guilford Township IL)

Valentin's mother was a Schömbs, Susanna Schömbs (*1783 Wahlheimer Hof). Susanna married Conrad Schönhardt to begin the Schömbs/Schönhardt branch of the family. Valentin was the second child and son of Susanna and Conrad. Valentin was born 1 November 1808 in Mommenheim. He emigrated in about 1840 and settled in Jo Daviess County, Illinois. On 1 May 1845 Valentin married Elizabeth Margaret Young (*1809 Hahnheim, +09.02.1886 Guilford Township, Jo Daviess Cty IL). The wedding was in Galena, Illinois. While this is not certain, Valentin and Elizabeth probably knew each other in Germany. Mommenheim and Hahnheim are about 4 kilometers (2+ miles) apart. Of the nine children of Susanna and Conrad, four emigrated. Also at least two of their grandchildren emigrated. All emigrated to the United States.
