- Friederic Joseph Schönhardt (*10.04.1852 Mommenheim, +02.05.1918 Centralia WA)
"The story told to me by my grandmother, eldest child of Frederick, was that he was sent to sea as a young man to avoid the Prussian draft. She said that this was a sore point with him because it meant that the sons would not inherited the family land. No mention of his family was told to me, so I thought he was the only Schonhardt to ever come to America. Now that I know so many did, I wonder if he was ever in contact with them. He may have emigrated in 1869 as the 1910 census tells, however the 1900 census record states he came in 1875. As he was born 10 Apr 1852, leaving at age 17 is plausible, as is 23.
He is found as a single man on the 1880 Klickitat County WA census as Frederick Schoenhardt 28 laborer born in Prussia. First deed record found for him is a land transaction in Klickitat County, Washington on 14 Nov 1889. It was a purchase of land from John Henderson and Addison Loomis of Olympia, WA.
By 1892, he has moved to Thurston County WA and is listed as a single man on the State census.
The next land record is a warranty deed, Jan 1904, for F. J. Schonhard and wife, Mary Schonhard and a Frank Miare of WA for land in Thurston County WA.
Frederick married Mary Ann Obrate (*07.01.1861 Iowa, +28.03.1930 El Cerrito CA) in Olympia WA on 5 Feb 1894. The family lived many years near the town of South Union.
His daughter, Lillian, remembers him as a warm and loving father. He worked his daughters hard but they did not resent him."
Mary Ann O'Brate was the eldest daughter of Fredric Moritz Obrecht Obrate and Alice Dorney. She was buried in Olympia. She was with the family in Rush County KS in 1885. It is not known why or when she went west to Washington State. She met and married Fredrich Schonhard in 1894. She was a very quiet person and spoke less as she grew older. She suffered greatly with arthritis in her hands and later other joints. Her last years were very self secluded. Because of her quiet manner, she was not close to her children. Some records place her birth in Ohio and some in Iowa.
