Introduction

6. German Casualties of the World Wars

Approximately 8 million persons were casualties of the First World War. Of this number about 1.8 million were Germans.

In World War II the number of casualties totaled about 34 million. The number of German civilians who were casualties of Allied actions was approximately 500,000, while the German armed forces suffered 3.63 million casualties.

The wars brought much sorrow and loss to members of our family. While the listing below is not complete, it does show that all branches of the family were involved and affected.

Among the inscriptions on the back of the memorial is to be found Herrnsheimer "Schembs, Pt., Fahrkr., 2. schw. Fuss. Batt."

On this occasion we should also remember other family members who were victims of totalitarian rule or violence. From the Hessian State Archives, Otto Schömbs was arrested for throwing cigarettes over the wall to imprisoned communits. He was imprisoned in Bad Nauheim.

From Amerika two such cases are known. On 9 November 1919 Sgt. Antone Schoembs of the San Francisco Police Department died in the line of duty. His name is on a 1988 Baldwin Park Memorial erected to the fallen "peace officers". Until today all the fallen officers are engraved on the plaque.

Antone Schoembs first practiced in the trade of bookbinding. In 1905 after the Earthquake he went into the Police Department. In 1919 he was shot by car thieves that he was attempting to arrest. His widow Anne received a pension of $70.

Michael Vincent Schembs (+1992)
From Philadelphia comes the story of Michael Vincent Schembs, the son of Donna and Robert Schembs. He died at age 18 from a gunshot wound on 3 April 1992. Michael loved sports and was a big Eagles and Flyers fan. He loved to play practical jokes on his friends. It was not uncommon for friends to find their baseball caps in the freezer. Michael wanted to join the Coast Guard or be a police officer.
