| Watercolor by Wolfram Schoembs at the age of 13 years (1920) |
As a child in Berlin he was very imaginative. Already at age 13 he was painting fairy tale objects which were printed in books and gave him attention. He used different methods including pencil, feather drawings, line drawings, water colors, and oil paintings. In addition he wrote numerous remarkable poems.
- 6.3..... Johann Jacob Ferdinand Schoembs (*05.12.1868 Offenbach, +15.07.1952 Flushing)
- Johann Jacob Ferdinand Schoembs was named for his uncle "Ferdinand Chambosse". But affectionately he was "Freddy".
Freddy emigrated to America at age 19 (1888). He returned to Germany at least one time, perhaps twice. There are Ellis Island records of his re-entry into the United States. An ocean map marking the progress of a return voyage in September, 1891, still exists.
- His whereabouts in his early years are unclear. He completed his naturalization papers in Cook County, Illinois, in 1896. He may have lived in New York City after that. He married Julia Fischer (*1883 New York, +21/6/1966 New Jersey). Then they probably moved to Connecticut (Greenwich or New Britain), and finally to Guttenberg, New Jersey (26th Street according to the 1920 Census), a german area in Hoboken. The map is confusing on this point. Today's map shows Guttenberg as being roughly across the Hudson from the middle of Central Park in Manhattan, about 80th Street. Yet there is not a 26th Street in Guttenberg today. To get to 26th Street on the Jersey side of the River you must go a couple of miles to the south, just south of the Jersey entrance to the Lincoln Tunnel. This is equivalent to about 36th Street in Manhattan. Freddie's first employment was working as a cook in a hotel. Later it is told that he was a supervisor for three large garden areas. Other information has him as a gardener. He took his own life in 1952.
Freddie changed the spelling of the name from Schoembs to Schembs. We have no explanation for this. As early as 1896 (naturalization papers) he is Ferdinand Schembs, yet as late as 1923 (a record relating to the baptism of Louisa) the name is written Schoembs. In the 1920 Census they are the Schembs. The change probably occured soon after his emigration. Most of the documentation for the family is with the spelling Schembs.
