The Story of Jacob Schönhardt

Jacob Schönhardt (*09 Sep 1824 Mommenheim, +26 Feb 1890 Jo Daviess Cty IL) emigrated from the area of Mommenheim in in the state of Hessen Darmstadt, Germany in 1840. He was 16 at the time of his emigration and probably made the journey with Valentine Schönhardt (*1808, +1878 Jo Daviess Cty, IL). Subject to further confirmation, Valentine was Jacob's brother and 32 at the time they came to Amerika. Jacob was a farmer in Jo Daviess County. In November 1855 Jacob declared his intent to become a U.S. citizen at the Jo Daviess County Circuit Court. Following the waiting period, he was naturalized 29 October 1858. On 3 June 1857 in Jo Daviess Cty, Jacob married Margaret King (*27 Sep 1837 Hessen, Germany, +24 Oct 1902 Guilford Twp, JoDaviess Cty IL). They were married by John M. Campbell, Justice of the Peace. Nine months later the first of their eleven children was born. In the 1865 Illinois State Census, the family name was entered as Shinart. Living with Jacob and Margaret, in addition to their children, were a man and woman between 50 and 60 years old. As the individual names were not entered in the State Census, we do not know who the couple was. In the 1870 Federal Census, Jacob's real estate was listed at $2400 value and personal property at $1000. His name was written as Jacob Schoenhardt. Jacob Schoenhardt was buried in the Schapville Presbyterian Cemetery, Thompson Township, Jo Daviess County. Buried with him on the same day was Lydia Schoenhardt, apparently his daughter who had died seven years earlier at the age of six.

John died of heart failure and is buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in Steele, as is Mary and some of their children. Mary died of heart disease and a large goiter.[2]

Maggie married Alf Ellingson (*12 Oct 1900, +Jan 1985 Bismarck ND). Maggie was an elementary school teacher. Alf worked for the State as an auditor. They lived in Valley City for a number of years, then moved to Bismarck later in their lives.

Paul was a young boy when his mother died. He was adopted by his grandparents Maggie and Alf. He took his grandparents name.

Paul married Lee Ann, who had three daughters from an earlier marriage. They live in the Minneapolis area.

5.3.....Ruby Schoenhard (*1 Oct 1902 Lafayette Cty WI)

Ruby married Charles Robb. They moved to Arlington, Washington.

"On one of my frequent trips to Seattle, Celia took me to Arlington to see Ruby. My recall was of a woman living in poverty. I believe she is buried in Arlington. Ruby was mentally challenged but was always kind and loving with our family. She was also a kleptomaniac and when we were young, she used to send a unique assortment of small items maybe a pretty piece of lace, a beautiful button, a small doll, a marble or other little things but she always remembered her sister Ellen's girls at Christmas or on our birthdays. Her letters were child-like and always began the same: 'I'm fine, hope you are the same.'" [1] Ruby died late in life.

5.4.....Ellen Irene Schoenhard (*24 Jul 1904 Darlington WI, +12.11.1937 Steele ND)

Ellen married George F.S. Stuntz (*07.07.1879 PA. ) in July 1924. They are buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in Steele.

"According to his obituary George was born on July 7, 1879 but it seems he may have shaved a couple of years off his age as genealogy research lists it as 1877. I'm not sure what the truth is about the matter but he told us he left home when his dad died in 1906 and there was a fight over the estate. He never had further contact with his relatives as he moved first to SDak but settled in NDak. According to the records he was declared dead in 1906 in order for his family to settle the estate. Came as a shock to them to find out he added six daughters to the genealogy line. The Stuntz genealogy is quite interesting dating back to the Revolution: As a paid Hessian soldier fighting for England, Conrad Stuntz came from Wurtenberg, Germany. Don't know how he ended up in the US Army (I believe he was captured) but after the war he was deeded 100 acres in PA where he married a Polish indentured servant." [1]

George was a farmer by profession. He raised livestock and grain on a small farm. Ellen had a good sense of humor. Family history tells of once when Ellen was driving to Steele with her children in the car, she raced a train. One of the kids told their father George. Dinner was very quiet that night.[1]

6.1.....Lois Caroline Stuntz (*24.08.1924 Steele ND, +07.01.1998)

After graduating from High school Lois moved to Minneapolis where she knew absolutely no one. She had a speech impediment so the first thing she did on leaving home was to change her name to one she could easily pronounce - "Nicki Whitman." She always swore she was going to live forever, and in this case it seems true as she was born Lois Stuntz but died Nicki Whitman without ever going to the courts to change her name. Her ashes were spread in the blue Pacific tides.[1]

"As I moved to Minneapolis too, after high school, my children and I call her Nicki while the rest of the family still calls her Lois. She had one son (out of wedlock around 1948) named Steven (Steve) who used the name Whitman until a few years ago when he claimed his birthright name Stuntz. Steve, who last I heard, was living in the Albuquerque, NM area. He came to Seattle when his mother was dieing but never went to see her. I don't know if he's still alive but he had two sons by different women he married."[1]

After high school Mary got her teaching degree and taught in rural schools for a couple of years. Then Adolph Reiker (* Tappen ND) married Mary Elizabeth. Soon after their daughter Judy was born the family moved to Seattle.

Mary died of breast cancer and is buried in Riverton Crest Cemetery in Seattle.

Barbara married Leo Berg from Wahpeton ND. Leo died young, soon after their five children were born. She lived in Kaycee, Wyoming. She passed away following a stroke in 2013 and is buried in Leonard ND.

Pat and Paul are identical twins. They both lived in Wyoming.

Paul was a Viet Nam Vet and earned both a Bronze Star and the RVN Cross of Gallantry. Paul had a heart attack and passed away in 2014. He is buried in Kaycee.

Nina was married on 3 Jul 1948 to Keith Mark Flanders (*09.02.1923 SD, +Nov 1998 Minneapolis). Keith was in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific during WWII. He served on a floating drydock. He was a flagman on the ship. Keith was a finish carpenter by profession.

Nina moved to Minneapolis after high school and worked for Royal Typewriter.

Michael served in the U.S. Navy from 1968 to 1971, including time in Vietnam. Michael and Sheila Mattila (*Richfield MN) were married on 20 Nov 1982.

Ryan has his own construction business. In his free time he is an ice and mountain climber. He is a bachelor.

Keith is a graduate of the University of Minnesota, where he majored in baseball and history. He married Vicki Leer.

Sylvia and Donald Hellmeyer were married in about 1950, soon after Sylvia graduated from high school. They moved to Illinois to be closer to his family. Sylvia had one daughter from her marriage with Don Hellmeyer. Sylvia divorced and later married Sam Medder (+abt 2007). They lived in Iuka, Illinois. She died in a car accident.

Lalerie died in a car accident on an icy bridge on her way to college classes. She is buried in Palestine Cemetery, Romine Twsp, Marion County, Illinois.

5.5.....Celia Rosetta Schoenhard (*23 Jun 1906 Grotiot WI, +abt 1982 Seattle WA)

Apparently the family moved to North Dakota in 1912 when Celia was six. She married Chris Schock (*Tappen ND) who was physically abusive. Celia divorced Chris in about 1940. Soon thereafter she moved to Arlington, Washington and later to Alaska. During the War she worked in a fish cannery in Alaska. In 1946 she relocated to Seattle WA, where she met and married Ray Ferkins (+1949), a military man.[1]

Until her retirement in 1970, she worked in the kitchen at Seattle's Public Health Hospital. "She was a real composite of good deeds (to strangers) and filled with dislikes that held grudges against all family members. In her later years, she had invested in real estate and had a sizeable estate when she died. She left it all to her real estate "partner" at the time. She left absolutely nothing for family members even as my sister had taken care of her in her final days when colon cancer ravaged her. To keep her will from being challenged, she left $1.00 to each of her 7 nieces and 2 nephews." [1] She was cremated and the urn of ashes was interred with her husband at Ft. Lewis military cemetery in Tacoma, WA.

Valentine Schoenhardt was married in about 1904 to Johanna M (*Abt. 1872 Denmark). It is possible that Mary was also one of her names.

Anna married August Boettner (*abt 1868 IL). The wedding was in Illinois.

Roscoe's wife was named Mildred. They lived in Woodbine Twp, Jo Daviess County IL.

Lincoln's mother Annie died giving birth to Lincoln. Lincoln was raised by one of his aunts. [3]

There is, however, potentially conflicting information. In the 1920 Census August and Annie Boettner (born about 1882 IL) are living in Elizabeth Township, Jo Daviess County with their two sons Roscoe and Lincoln. Then in the 1930 Census Lincoln is still living with August and Annie Boettner (born about 1881 IL). It is clear that this are the same August and Lincoln Boettners. But the birth year for Annie is off by about eight years. Is it possible that August's first wife died in childbirth and he later married another woman, also with the name Annie? But Census information is often in error so we don't know for sure.
