- Heinrich Schoembs-James of Evansville
CLICK to trace the ancestors of Heinrich Schömbs - The Story of Heinrich Schoembs-James (1810-1889)
- For several years we had documentation of a Schoembs family living in Evansville, Indiana, in the 1860-70 timeframe. They appeared in the 1870 Census, some City Directories, and there was documentation of their children's marriages. But that was all. We did not know from where Henry Schoembs had come, nor what happened to the family after the 1870s. They vanished! They did not appear in the 1880 Census, or other sources. A good friend of Emily Bocko's, Jean Wiseman, who lives in Evansville, had assisted and found the above mentioned references.

1870 Evansville Census - Only after realizing that at least two other early Schömbs emigrants had changed their surname from "Schoembs" to "James", did we think to search for the Heinrich Schoembs family under a new surname. The search was successful! The result has had multiple ramifications in solving the riddle of Heinrich Schoembs of Evansville.
On May, 8, 1873, John Schoembs-James married Rosa Schnabel. They do not appear in the 1880 Census. However, in the Census does appear Rosa James, a 25 year old widow, with twin six year old daughters. The significant point is that she and her daughters are living with the Schnabels! A very logical situation, if her maiden name was Schnabel. Rosa is enumerated as having German parents -- i.e. the Schnabels. Maggie Schnabel, also a widow, is enumerated as being born in Rheinpfalz (Germany). This all is part of the evidence that the Schoembs family changed their name to James.
1880 Evansville Census - Finally, in Carmi, Illinois, in the 1880 Census, appears a Henry James family. Carmi is a town 30 miles to the west of Evansville, IN.

1880 Carmi, IL, Census - The similarities between the Henry James family in Carmi in 1880, and the Henry Schoembs family in 1870 are indisputable. Henry was born in 1810 in Hesse Darmstadt; his wife Lucy was born in 1810 in Prussia; their daughter Margaret/Maggie was born in 1851 in Kentucky; and their son Joseph was born in 1854 in Indiana. It is clear that they are the same family. In 1870 their son John lived with them. By 1880 he had married and died (husband of Rosa James, above). Their son Henry Jr., born in 1843 in Ohio, was not living with them in 1870, but was in 1880. He is enumerated as a widower in the 1880 Census.
While the family probably would never have used a hypenated name in the 19th Century, i.e. "Schoembs-James", we do use it in this chapter for those persons who were born a "Schoembs" but died a "James". This was true for Henry and Lucy as well as four of their five children. All their children with the exception of Mary (*1843) changed their family name. By the time they did this Mary had married and took on the family name of her husband. - The Birth of Heinrich Schoembs (James)
- Two factors allow us to identify the German family into which Heinrich Schömbs was born. First, we have the birthdate for Heinrich from the burial monument (see below). He was born 24 June 1810 in Hahnheim, Hessen Darmstadt, Germany. Hahnheim is located three kilometers (2 miles) north of Undenheim, the home of Zacharias Schömbs. Second, Heinrich was one of a handful of Schömbs emigrants who changed their surname to James. In all cases the change was made years after they emigrated. In Amerika they lived far apart in different states. Click on the Link to the James Family Name, for more information. Therefore they were undoubtedly close in both relationship and geography in Germany, prior to their emigration. They knew each other and stayed in contact after emigration.
Given this logic, Heinrich Schoembs James (*1810) was most assuredly born in Hahnheim, the son of Martin (*1777) and Regina Schömbs. We have the birthrecord for Heinrich. We have no other documentation of his life in Germany, consistent with someone who emigrated and therefore neither married nor died in Germany.
The following logic was used to calculate a range of birthdates, prior to finding the headstone at the cemetery: "Our information on the birth in Hahnheim, however, only states the year as 1810. We do not have the month and day. If we really had confidence in the Census information, we could pin his birthday down to between 12 June and 10 July of 1810. Heinrich was enumerated as being 60 years old in the 1870 Census (recorded on 10 July 1870) and 69 in the 1880 Census (recorded on 11 June 1880). But this might be expecting too much from Census data." Now that the headstone has been located and the date is stated as 24 June 1810, the date range is validated. But generally Census information is not this reliable. (jds) - The Emigration and Marriage of Heinrich Schoembs (James)
- While we have no specific record of the emigration of Heinrich from Germany, nor his immigration into Amerika, we can piece together the puzzle from the following logic:
- Per the 1870 and 1880 Census information, Lucy Schoembs (Heinrich's wife) is shown to have come from Prussia, while Heinrich is from Hessen Darmstadt. Therefore it is unlikely that Heinrich and Lucy knew each other in Germany. It is possible they met on the boat from Europe. Otherwise they met in their new country. Their first child Maria was married in 1860 to Caspar Limberg. She was probably at least 18 years old, giving her a birthyear of no later than 1842. The first major Germany emigration to Amerika did not begin until the mid-1840s. Therefore Heinrich, and Lucy, were at the very front of the wave.
- It is from the cemetery monuments that we now know the dates of birth and death of many of the family members. Lucy was born Lucia Frisse (*29.01.1810, +21.06.1891 Carmi). Heinrich Schoembs married Lucy Frisse. It was a number of years later when they changed their name to James.
I would speculate that Heinrich and Lucy each emigrated about 1840. They met, married, and had their first child in 1842. This makes Heinrich one of the first Schömbs emigrants, of whom we are aware, to Amerika. It also makes him one of the earliest Schömbs emigrants to any country. Thomas Schembs (*1770 Gundheim) emigrated to Brazil in 1825. In 1840 Heinrich was 30 years old. Lucy was 31. Further research might shed more light on the subject.
From the marriage records of two of their children, we have information about Lucy, Heinrich's wife. However, the information is in conflict. Per the 1860 marriage record for their daughter Maria, her mother's maiden name is Lucy Trisse. However, from the 1865 marriage record for their son John Henry, his mother's maiden name was Lucy Hezzelmann. As noted below, Lucy's maiden name was most likely neither of the above, but rather Frisse.- Where They Lived in Amerika
- A small number of the family emigrants, when arriving in Amerika, spent their first few years moving before they settled down in their final home. Heinrich, and his wife Lucy, appear to have been more mobile than most. But then, they were also the earliest. The country was changing rapidly and the emigration wave was beginning to burst.
The first evidence of an address for the Schoembs is in 1864. They are listed in the Evansville, IN, City Directory as living at Canal Street and 6th. It then says Lamasco, which was a district or part of Evansville. However, from the various Census information for the family, it appears that Evansville was at least their third stop.
The 1880 Census indicates that Henry, their first born, was born in 1843 in Ohio. Census information on births only includes the state or country, not the city. This is the only citation of the family living in Ohio, so there is a possibility that it is in error.
Census information for both John Henry (*1848) and Margaret/Maggie (*1851), however, indicates that they were born in Kentucky. Given that this information appears in four different Census (1870, 1880, 1900, and 1910), it is undoubtedly correct. These four Census give KY as the birthplace of Maggie. The 1870 Census is the only Census in which John Henry is shown, and he is identified as being born in KY. A search of the Kentucky Census for 1850 does not find the Schoembs.
Their last child, Joseph (*1854), was born in Indiana, and most likely Evansville. Their oldest child Maria was married in Evansville in 1860, and son John Henry married in Evansville in 1865. City Directories for Evansville list the Schoembs starting in 1864 and continuing through 1872. Since the revelation of the name change to James was made after the City Directory information was researched, we must now go back and look for the family in the mid-late-1870's in Evansville.
We know the family had moved to Carmi, Illinois, by the date of the 1880 Census. The U.S. Census for 1890 was destroyed in a fire in Washington, D.C., and therefore no longer exists. By 1900 Henry and Lucy would have been 90 years old and probably had passed away. At this time we assume that Henry and Lucy lived the rest of their lives in Carmi. Since at least two of their children were also living in Carmi, this should be a reasonable assumption. We should locate death and burial information in Carmi in the near future.
Generally the names of emigrants (e.g. Heinrich Schoembs of Evansville, IN) remain consistant in these chapters. However, in the case of this family and the change of the family name to James, we will attempt to use "Schoembs-James" for Heinrich, Lucy, and their children who were born and christened as "Schoembs" and died as "James".
Where the some of the children of Henry and Lucy lived is still unclear. Maggie and Joseph, the two youngest, went with the parents to Carmi and lived their lives in southern Illinois. John Henry Schoembs James' widow, Rosa, appears to have stayed in Evansville and raised her family. Henry, Jr., was living with the family in Carmi in 1880, but no trace of him has been found after that date. Finally, Maria married in Evansville and most likely raised her family there.- Their Lives in Evansville

There is an interesting excise tax assessment list from the year 1862. (Note: when the images of old records appear blurry, try zooming in. You might find a zoom level which is significantly improved,) The assessment lists Henry Schoembs on lines 19 and 20 as being in the wholesale liquor business and owing $22.92 in taxes, apparently the license required for operating his business.
From the Evansville City Directories we can learn some things about the occupations and residences of Henry: - It is from the cemetery monuments that we now know the dates of birth and death of many of the family members. Lucy was born Lucia Frisse (*29.01.1810, +21.06.1891 Carmi). Heinrich Schoembs married Lucy Frisse. It was a number of years later when they changed their name to James.

- It is interesting to note that in 1866 Henry is listed as working for his son-in-law, Casper Limberg. But a few years later he is working at a sawmill. In 1872 Henry would have been 62 years old. No occupation is given for him.
Based upon the Census from the years 1870 and 1880 together with the Evansville City Directoris, the timing of their change of name from Schoembs to James might have occurred simultaneously with their move to Carmi, IL. This was in the mid- to late-1870's. - The St. Polycarp Cemetery
- Several family members are buried at the St. Polycarp Cemetery, located to the west of Carmi.

click to enlarge- The Reitz Family in Evansville
- Oral history for the James family tells us that their forefathers who lived in Evansville were related to the "Reitz" family, and that the Reitz home is now a historic home in Evansville. A search of the yielded a website for the Reitz Home Museum. The website gives much interesting information about the Reitz family in Germany prior to emigration, and the Evansville family of John August Reitz (*1815 Dorlar, +1891 Evansville).

The Reitz Family Home/Museum - Franz Josef Reitz (*1779 Dorlar, +1862 Evansville) married three times in Germany. His first wife died in 1810, two weeks after delivering their third child. Franz Josef remarried the following year. His second wife died in 1819, having given birth to five more children.
Franz married for the third time in 1821. They had nine more children. (note- of the seventeen children of Franz Josef Reitz, five did not survive past the age of six months) Two of the Reitz children married into the Limberg family (see reference below where the Schoembs family marries into the Limberg family in Evansville). Franz Josef, his third wife Ernestine Wehn Reitz, and ten of his children emigrated to Amerika. Whether they all emigrated together is not known, nor is it known if they all came to Evansville. Their oldest son appears to have emigrated in 1844.
Their second oldest child who emigrated was Johann August Reitz (*1815, +1891). Per the website of the Reitz Home Museum "John Augustus Reitz had already made his fortune in lumber by the mid-1850's". In 1839 John August married Catherine Gertrude Frisse (*1820, +1893). Again, from the oral history we know Henry and Lucy Schoembs were in some way related to the Reitz family. We can now see that Lucy's maiden name must have been Frisse, not Trisse or Hezzelman as other documentation suggests. Lucy was born in 1809. Assuming that she was the sister of Catherine Frisse, rather than the cousin, Lucy was the older sister of Catherine Frisse Reitz. - The Deaths of Heinrich and Lucy
- Heinrich passed away on 8 February 1889 in Carmi, Illinois. Lucy followed Heinrich two years later on 21 June 1891.

- Then in 1880, Henry Jr. is enumerated in the Census as living in Carmi, IL, with his parents, sister Maggie, and brother Joseph. He is indicated to be 37 years old, either a widower or divorced (this is indicated by the mark in the fifth column to the right of his age), working as an Engineer in a mill, and having been born in Ohio. Nothing else is known about his marriage, or if they had children.
At this time we have no other information about Henry Jr. He seems to have just disappeared. - 5.2.....Maria "Mary" A. Schoembs-James (*about 19.12.1843 Maysville KY, +08.10.1920 Evansville IN)
- We know first of Maria from the documentation of her marriage to Caspar Limberg (*21.07.1828 Dorlar, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany, +19.06.1898 Evansville IN) on 27 November 1860. At the time of their wedding Mary was 17 years old and Caspar 31. As mentioned above, Maria is cited as the daughter of Henry and Lucy Trisse Schaems. Maria's name was entered as Maria Schaems. Witnesses at the marriage were August Reitz (see Johann August Reitz above) and Adam Muller. Caspar Limberg was the son of Frederick Limberg and Helena Reitz. This is a third case of the Limberg and Reitz families marrying. Caspar was the second of at least seven children of Frederick and Helena.
From Evansville City Directories we can learn more about the Caspar Limberg family: -

- In 1880 Caspar is enumerated in the Census as a wagonmaker. The family is on the last three lines of Page 13 of Perry Township in Vanderburgh County. They then continue on the first six lines of Page 14. Their sons Henry and Frederick, ages 16 and 13 respectively, work for their father. While the Census is difficult to read, zooming in makes it relatively clear.

- 5.3.....John Henry Schoembs-James (*30.03.1848 Kentucky, +07.11.1879 Evansville)
- John Henry, the second son, was married twice. His first marriage was 10 Jan 1865 to Caroline Fabry (*27.11.1846 Joehlingen/Karlsruhe/Baden, +9.01.1877 IN). Caroline emigrated in 1851 as a two-year-old with her parents from Germany to Amerika. The passenger list showing the family is also available.
Caroline is identified in the marriage records as the daughter of Simon and Frances Scherz Fabry. Witnesses were George Lennert and Anthony Lanzing. They were married by a Catholic priest. The transcribed record of their marriage must have the year wrong, as Caroline was clearly a Schoembs by 1868 as shown below.
The next part of the story is a little obscure. It appears that John Henry and Caroline had a child, a daughter in 1865. - Children (3)
- 3.1.....Francisca Carolina Schoembs (*26.11.1865 Evansville IN)
- But there is no other record of Francisca except her probable burial at Saint Joseph Cemetery. Children were not listed in City Directories. Based upon the Cemetery record it appears that Francisca was never a James.
- In the 1868 City Directory Caroline Schoembs is listed, but not John Henry. Caroline is shown to work at Mrs. Fabry and S., and be living at n e s 3rd bet Vine and Sycamore. We know nothing about the business Mrs. Fabry and S., but it could have been Caroline's business or that of her mother or sister. Also shown in the 1868 City Directory is a James Schoembs, also living at the 3rd, between Sycamore and Vine address. This is undoubtedly in error. It is probably John Henry, but the upcoming name change slipped into the Directory, also in error.
In the 1870 Directory John Schoembs is listed as a laborer, boarding at the home of Henry Schoembs, Lamasco. Apparently the end of the marriage of John and Caroline was at hand. Similarly in 1872 John Henry is listed as a teamster, living with his parents.
The second marriage of John Henry Schoembs was conducted by a Justice of the Peace on 8 May 1873. He married Rosa Schnabel (*1855 IN). From the 1880 Evansville Census, we know that John Henry was deceased, the family had changed their surname to James, and they had twin daughters: - 3.2.....Maggie James (*1874)
- 3.3.....Carrie James (*1874)
- Indiana Deaths, 1882-1920 lists a Carrie E. James as having died at age 30 in 1910. This is probably not the same person.
- In 1880 Rosa and her twin daughters were living with her mother, Maggie Schnabel, also a widow, on West Virginia Street.
- 5.4.....Margaret "Maggie" Schoembs-James (*~Sep 1851 Kentucky, +after 1910)
- Maggie Schoembs is enumerated in four Census (1870, 1880, 1900, and 1910). While her birthyear is significantly later in the 1900 and 1910 Census, it is fairly certain that she was born in 1851. The 1870 and 1880 Census give this as her birth year. Children are listed in the Census in the order of their age, oldest first. In the 1870 Census she is said to be 19 years old, and is listed between John and Joseph. Similarly in 1880 she is shown to be born in 1851 and three years older than Joseph. If the birthyears from the 1900 or 1910 Census were correct, she would have been younger than Joseph.
Maggie did not marry. When her parents moved in the 1870s to Carmi, Illinois, Maggie went with them, and lived in the family home in 1880 in Carmi. No occupation is given for her. By 1900 her parents were deceased and Maggie is enumerated as owning a home on Fifth Street. Her occupation is working in a restaurant, probably for her brother Joseph. She is enumerated in the Census as head of household, with brother Joseph and nephews Charles H. and Earl, ages 14 and 12, living with her.
In 1910 she is living with her brother Joseph on Fourth Street. She was not found in either the 1920 or 1930 Census.
- 5.5.....Joseph Francis Schoembs-James (*15.01.1854 Indiana, 30.05.1911 Evansville IN)
- Joseph Schoembs James is the only child of Henry and Lucy, whose living descendants we have succeeded in locating at this time. Presented here is an outline. It will be supplemented as more detailed information becomes available.
Joseph was married in 1884 to Lucy Ingersol (*IL). By the 1900 Carmi Census Joseph and his two sons are living with Joseph's sister Maggie, in her home on Fifth Street. Joseph is married but his wife is not living in the house, according to the Census. Joseph and Lucy divorced. She later re-married. Joseph's occupation is restaurant manager. - Children: (4)
- 4.1.....Charles Henry James (*18.09.1886 IL, +09.1971 Raleigh, Saline Cty IL)
- In 1907 Charles married Verlie Ona Cochran (*1889 IL, +1959 Saline Cty IL). In 1910 they lived in Harrisburg Township, Saline County IL. Living with the family in 1910 was a 24 year old "servant", Glyde Hammersley. But their first child, born in about 1908 is enumerated as born in Colorado.
In 1920 Verlie is enumerated as the Head of household. She owns the house in Raleigh Township. Verlie is married. It is unclear why Charles is not living with the family.

- Pete James' first child was a boy, borne by Georgia Alberta Meyer. It is questionable whether they married. Pete soon thereafter married Alice Lessing. Both families lived in San Antonio TX.
- Children: (3)
With Georgia Meyer- - 3.1.....Charles Francis "Pete" James (*Sep 1935 San Antonio TX)
- "Pete" Schembs (*1935) spent much of his career working for Otis Elevator. He is now retired. Pete married three times. His first wife was Marlene Genske (*Wisconsin). After their divorce he married Dayle.
Pete has now been married to Jean Foose (*1943 Greeley CO) for 35 years. They were married in Littleton CO in 1979. Jean too has retired, she from a position at the city of Hesperia CA. They enjoy traveling throughout the west but especially to Great Falls MT to see their Jean's son Scott Clinger. Pete and Jean live in Helendale CA.
They have traveled frequently, taking many cruises. Pete plays golf regularly. They garden, read and enjoy discussion groups they are a part of. Pete is a history buff. - Children: (3)

- 4.3.....Cole
- 4.4.....Cole
- 4.2.....Earl Edwin James (*28.11.1888 Wabash County IL, 11.06.1957 Hawthorne Twp, White County IL)
- In 1930 Earl was single and 41 years old, living in Carmi IL. His father is enumerated as having been born in IN, his mother in IL. This is certainly the same Earl. He is proprietor of a restaurant and not a veteran.
- 4.3.....Lucy James (*perhaps ~1890)
- We know that Joseph and Lucy had four children and that they then divorced. Based upon the 1900 Census, when Joseph was living with his two older sons, one might speculate that Lucy and Fred were born in the early 1890s and then went with their mother Lucy when the couple separated prior to 1900. We don't know whether Lucy was born before Fred.
- 4.4.....Frederick James (*18.03.1891 Indiana, +Jul 1967)
- Fred moved to Kansas City MO where he worked for a furniture store as a truck driver. Fred married Marjean (*1911 Missouri). They had a son and a daughter. This information is from oral family history and shoebox notes. But it is corroborated in the entries for Fred in the 1930 and 1940 Census. The single discrepancy is that he is enumerated as having been born in Indiana. Carmi is 10 miles from the Indiana state line. His date of birth and death date are from the Social Security Death Index.
- Children: (2)
- 2.1.....Fred James Jr (*1933 MO)
- 2.2.....Margaret Jean (*1937 MO)
