The HERRNSHEIMER SCHEMBS

Introductory Remark:

The direct ancestors of the Herrnsheimer Schembs Line come like all Schembs/Schömbs/Schoembs from the founder Zacharias Schömbs (1645-1707) of Undenheim/Rheinhessen. The Laubenheim Line of the family shares the spelling variation"Schembs" with the Herrnsheim Line. With a look at the telephone book in Herrnsheim, and then a tour through the local cemetary, one quickly realizes that the Herrnsheim Schembs is the largest single branch of the Schömbs family. While today there are still more Schembs in Laubenheim than family members in other cities in Germany, the number residing in Laubenheim is less than in earlier times. Like the Laubenheim Schembs, the Herrnsheim Schembs branch goes back well over 200 years from today (to the mid-1700s). In contrast the Undenheim family (Schömbs), starting in Undenheim in the late 1600s, grew through the 1700s and early 1800s, but by 1900 the name disappeared. Today many people in Undenheim are descendants of Zacharias Schömbs, but none carry his family name, regardless of spelling variations.

The Herrnsheim Schembs trace their ancestry to two family members, Johann Heinrich Schembs (1713-1785) and Andreas Schömbs (1725-1796), both of whom married young women in Herrnsheim and both moved from Undenheim to Herrnsheim. Joh. Heinrich (1713), was the cousin of Andreas (1725). Joh. Heinrich was 12 years the senior of the two, and preceded his cousin by perhaps 15 years in setting up house in Herrnsheim.

Joh. Heinrich Schömbs (1713-1785) 1.

Overview:

Johann Heinrich Schömbs was the first Schömbs in Herrnsheim. He came to Herrnsheim in 1738 through his marriage to Catharina Elisabeth, the daughter of the Herrnsheim farmer Philipp Holtzemer and his wife Maria Agnes.

In the Herrnsheim churchbook the family name was entered as "Schembs". Later priests in Herrnsheim recorded the family name as "Schems" and "Schemß". In the Historical Chronicle of Herrnsheim we also find the spelling "Schömbs" to record the emigration in 1849 of Mathias Schömbs to America. With 11 children, Joh. Heinrich started off the Herrnsheim branch quickly. Typical of the times, however, we should remind the reader that large families were required because of the high death rate. Of the 11 children, four of the sons and at least two of the daughters appear to have died before the age of 4 years. We only have documentation of four of the children who reached maturity and married. They were all sons. Of the others, one daughter died as an infant, a second died at age 3, a son at age 11, and the fates of the remaining four are unknown. Joh. Heinrich Schömbs was born in Undenheim on 15.06.1713, the seventh child of Johann Heinrich Schömbs (1675-1753). Godfather was Mathäus Heinrich Sommer of Weinolsheim. Johann Heinrich died on 01.11.1785 in Herrnsheim. Joh.Heinrich Schömbs had 10 siblings. From here the different lines like the Laubenheimer and Friesenheimer lines as well as until now the little explored Oppenheimer line went forth. The Oppenheimer research was difficult due to the extremely poor legibility of sections of the church-books. Johann Heinrich was married 28.01.1738 in Herrnsheim to Catharina Elisabetha Holtzemer (*1723, died 18.06.1793 in Herrnsheim). Marriage witnesses were, according to the Churchbook, Anton Seip and Christopher Holtzemer. Joh. Heinrich Schömbs was, by occupation, a Küfermeister.

Johann Ludwig Schembs was born in Herrnsheim on 13.02.1739. Godfather was Johann Ludwig Kindhausen from Klein-Rohrheim. Johann Ludwig Schembs was married on 31.01.1764 in Gundheim to Sophia Bertges (*1752, +9.12.1813 Dittelsheim). The birth year for Sophia is derived from her death record, which says she was 61 years old at the time of her death. This would make her thirteen years younger than her husband Ludwig, which would not be that unusual, but only twelve years old when she delivered their first child. Most likely the death record is wrong by perhaps as much as ten years regarding her age at the time of death.

Thomas Schembs married twice. His first wife was Maria Theresia Conradi (*1777 Heßloch, +02.01.1814 Dittelsheim). Following the death of Theresia Conradi in 1814, Thomas married Anna Margaretha Seipp (*1790 Bechtolsheim, +09.05.1855 Gravatai RS, Brazil). Thomas and his two wives lived in Dittelsheim (today Dittelsheim/Heßloch). The family name was sometimes recorded as Schömbs, at other times Schems or Schembs. In Brazil the spelling changed again to primarily Schemes.

For a number of years we believed that the Thomas Schembs family lived in Heßloch. Further research, however, has been convincing that they lived in Dittelsheim. Dittelsheim and Heßloch were two villages perhaps as much as a kilometer (.6 miles) apart. They both had Catholic churches. The Mormon transcriptions of the records said Heßloch. Perhaps this was because his first wife, Maria Theresia Conradi, was from Heßloch as noted in the baptismal register.

We asked the town historian how he interpreted the baptismal records. His response: "Die eingekreisten Stellen bedeuten, dass diese Personen in Dittelsheim getauft wurden. Diese Daten sind aus dem Taufbuch der damaligen Zeit. Wo sie später gelebt oder verstorben sind weiß ich nicht." Or in Englisch: "The circled places mean that these persons were baptized in Dittelsheim. These dates are from the baptismal register of that time. Where they lived or died later I do not know." But all the children then were baptised in Dittelsheim.

There is one other record, however, which indicates they lived in Dittelsheim. The record of Thomas's emigration indicates Dittelsheim as his hometown. This record is from the Hessen State Archives of emigrants. "Herkunft" translates to "place of Origin" or "hometown".

The dates given for births are actually dates of baptism extracted from the church books. In most cases German babies were baptised within a very few days of their birth.

When his father, step-mother, and siblings emigrated to Brazil in 1825 Heinrich was the only child who remained in Germany. He was twenty-four years old at the time. Heinrich married on 01.11.1829 Catharina Hamscher (*04.03.1804). They had one son (Heinrich) born in 1829. Heinrich Sr. then died fifteen months later.

Anna Margaretha did not emigrate in 1825 with her parents. She is not named in the Kranich passenger list. She would have been 12 years old at the time of the emigration. It is assumed she died as an infant or young girl.

Godfather at the christening was Johannes Hagenauer. Johannes Schembs II. was married three times. On 02.11.1832 he married Elisabetha Janzon, nee Finck,who died two and a half months after the wedding on 18.01.1833. Witnesses at the wedding were Philipp Schembs and Jacob Christopher Schembs. Only a month later, Johannes remarried. His second wife was Magdalena Schwalb (*06.06.1807, +11.11.1846). Witnesses were Christophorus Schembs und Philipp Schwalb.

His second wife Magdalena passed away in November, 1846, nine months after having their eighth child. Two months later Johannes married a third time. His third wife was Regina Burkhardt (*1812, +02.06.1881). The wedding took place on 28.01.1847.

Johann Karl Peter Schembs was married on 13.12.41 to Elsa Paula Blank, from Bohnsack/Danzig (*1924, +2008).

Peter Schembs had the nickname "Dibbe". The name is supposed to go back to when he was always the first to peek into the pot. Peter was, in contrast to his father, tall (1.80 m).

He is described as a good, reliable, and careful family father. As the first born, Peter had to take on extra responsibilities in the family. When his father became unemployed during the Depression, Peter went to work at a leather factory, earning money to help feed the family. After the War (WWII) he was a technical leader at the leather factory.

Peter Schembs was for many years a professional soldier in the Sanitätswesen, ultimately serving as a Seargeant Major. In addition to his work he was active in the Red Cross, the gymnastics Club, and played the flute in the local band.

Monika's first marriage was to Bernd Kleinkauf. She later married Friedrich Schlösser. Monika is skilled in the wholesale trades, and has worked since then for many years as an accountant at the City of Worms.

Oliver Kleinkauf is an electrical engineer, and works as a shift leader at the nuclear power plant in Biblis.

Doris Schembs was married on 14.11.1970 to Rainer Alfred Busch from Halle (*1940). Doris Schembs also started working in the wholesale businees, and is now employed in the administration of the Worms Theater.

Wilhelm Schembs married Anneliese Ruppert (*23.07.1922 in Worms, + 1986). Wilhelm Schembs worked as a foreman in a rubber factory in Frankenthal. His nickname was "Spitze-Gigges", which described his habit of splitting hairs presumably.

Robert Schembs married Katharina Volk (* 1924). It is reported that Robert was a large man, who worked as a foreman in the masonry trade.

H.J. Schembs married Helen Stöckli (*1946). By profession he was a trained chef. Today he lives with his family in Switzerland in Ittingen/Bern, where he operates a men's specialty store.

Michael Schembs lives in Bern, Switzerland.

Helmut Schembs married Herta Jung. He is an architect by profession. In 1983 Jim Schembs, then from Portland, Oregon USA, while on a trip to Europe with his family, came to the office of Helmut and introduced himself. Jim was particularly interested to find the office using Apple computers. More advanced than most offices in the United States at the time.

Franz Schembs fell in the First World War in France. He is buried in the War Memorial in Sissonne, France (Endgrablage: Block 7, Grab 302). His wife Theresia later remarried. Mathias Schembs, a barber by profession, committed himself on April 1, 1861 as a military person for five years. According to the service book, he served in the 3rd Grand-Ducal Hessian Infantry Regiment -Leibregiment – in the 2nd Compagnie.

In the Wiesbaden records, in which the Wiesbaden naturalisations are noted, is Mathias Schembs 1878, under the number 8542, as "Mathäus Schembs from Herrnsheim/Kreis Worms" and the occupation with his family written down as "Bader".

Das Grab von Mathias Schembs

Mathias Schembs moved in 1878 from Herrnsheim to Wiesbaden and was there a hotel owner of the "Badehaus Schembs". The hotel was located in the center of Wiesbaden on the Häffnergasse. In World War II it was destroyed in the Allied bombing of Wiesbaden. Mathias is buried in the Alten Friedhof (Old Cemetery in Wiesbaden. The Alten Friedhof is today a park with a leisure terrain. Some of the old gravestones are still preserved there. The grave of Mathias Schembs is today located in the Nordfriedhof (North Cemetery) in Wiesbaden. The gravestone of Mathias is somewhat unusual, because it is inscribed on both sides. Since the front side of the stone was full, they turned the stone over and wrote his name on the back.

In the grave is also buried the mother of Marie Gumbinger, Henriette Gumbinger, nee Haberstock (1816-1893).

Julius Schembs was probably also active in the hotel business of his father. He was a co-founder of the organization Wiesbadener Schützengesellschaft and active as its second Secretary. In the local Club he should be portrayed in the organization's photo.

Willy Schembs was also a hotel operator. In 1931 he emigrated to Brazil, but later returned to Wiesbaden. He died in the Second World War in uniform.

Helene Schembs married a Mr. Bender. Together in 1900 they founded the Hotel Bender on the Häfnergasse in Wiesbaden. Thirty years later she, with her son, managed the Hotel "Weiße Lilien". The two side-by-side buildings were destroyed in 1944 in the bombings of Wiesbaden.

Helene developed herself much income through tourism in Wiesbaden, and became a well known personality in the city. In her obituary she was described as the "Mother of Wiesbaden artists". In her hotel composers, actors, authors and artists associated. For many decades she was a part of the best known theater-goers. In her later years she was honored by the Director of the Wiesbadener Staatstheaters as the oldest subscriber.

	They spent their childhood in Worms, where Karl-Heinz attended a grammar school and Elfriede went to Eleonorenschule. In 1936 their father was dismissed because of political reasons -- he was a civil servant working for the municipal authorities in Worms -- and moved with his family to Mecklenburg. After the War he was rehabilitated and went back to Worms. Karl-Hezin studied Protestant theology in Rostock and Erlangen. After Elfriede had finished school in Rostock she started an apprenticeship in domestic economics in Subzin in Mecklenburg. In 1940/41 she was trained at the "Lettehaus" in Berlin as secretary in agricultural business. After that she worked as a secretary for the Laschendorf estate. After her wedding in 1943 Elfriede and her husband lived in Fürstenhof. Because of the land reform in 1945 they were expropriated without being given any compensation. They had to start anew with nothing by leasing a farm in Breesen near Laage. In January 1953 they decided to flee the GDR. After several refugee camps the family found their new home in Bonn in September 1954. Elfriede is still living there. Much to her pleasure her children and grandchildren live not far from her.

Manfred Neidig lives in Worms-Horchheim. He was the principal in a special needs school. In the Second World War the family's home was bombed and they lost everything. As a result there are no books or records about the family. Manfred Neidig can still remember a little about a visit by relatives during his childhood. His memory is of a relative of his mother, a protestant priest Heinz Metzler, whom they showed the city of Worms.

Jacob Schembs IV was a cartwright by trade. The profession of Wagners (cartwrights) was in the family tradition. As the oral history goes, several generations had been Wagners. In a town register of Herrnsheim from 1815, there is only one inhabitant shown as a Wagner – a Michel Schöpflin. Jacob Schembs ("Schemß") is identified in the list as a plowman. It is possible then, that the family took up the trade of Wagner some time later from Michel Schöpflin.

One of the predecessors bequeathed old Cartwright tools, a big circular form, today hangs as a special antique in the winery of Arno Schembs in Herrnsheim. It comes from the year 1702, with subsequent inscriptions from later years. Presumably it was acquired by a family member (ancestor) of Arno's at some point in time from the Jacob Schembs line.
