Catherine Schönhardt (*1809 Lörzweiler, +13.09.1871 Buffalo NY)

Catherine Krost (*1809) was born Catharina Schönhardt, the third child of Conrad and Susanna Schömbs (*1783 Wahlheimerhof) Schönhardt. She was born in Lörzweiler, a small village three Km (2 miles) to the northeast of Mommenheim and 7 Km (4 miles) to the northeast of Wahlheimerhof. Various records of the births of the children of Conrad and Susanna show the location as Lörzweiler, while others show Mommenheim. Catherine was the Great-great-great-granddaughter of Zacharias Schömbs (*1645, +1707). Her year of birth is shown here as 1809. There is conflicting information at this time, whether the year should be 1809 or 1812.

Marriage to Ludwig Krost (*abt 1807, Mommenheim, + 1881 Buffalo NY)

On February 10, 1833, Catharina married Ludwig Krost (*abt 1807, +11.10.1881 Buffalo NY) in Mommenheim. Ludwig was the son of Elizabeth Schmidt and Johannes Jacob Krost. Their first child Maria Magdalena was born four months later. She was followed by four more children prior to their emigration.

Emigration to Amerika

In August 1843 the Krost family boarded the Belgian bark Emma in Antwerp, captained by Charles Sheridan. They disembarked in New York City 13 September 1843. They emigrated with four of their five children. The oldest, Maria Magdalena (*20.06.1833 Mommenheim), who would have been ten years old at the time, is documented to have died in Mommenheim on 26 Nov 1846, three years after the rest of the family emigrated. This is somewhat unusual that she would have been left behind by her parents at age 10. There are a few possibilities: Perhaps she was ill, unable to travel, and remained with relatives, passing away three years later; perhaps there is confusion in the interpretation of the birth documents and she was actually the daughter of another Schönhardt in Mommenheim, in which case she would most likely have been a niece to Catharina and Ludwig. For this reason, Maria is not yet shown below as a descendant of Catharina and Ludwig. (jds note: While the first scenario seems unlikely to the 21st Century reader, I have a personal experience which makes it more plausible. My paternal grandmother emigrated as a two-month old with her parents in 1883 from Sweden. They left their three year old son, my grandmother's brother, on the dock with his grandmother. As the story goes, this was a last minute decision and he was to be brought to Amerika by an uncle, who was coming later in the year. The exact reasons for his being left behind, and also for his never following with the uncle, or anyone else, are not clear. The fact is that he was raised in Sweden and is the grandfather of my many Swedish second-cousins.) They were one of the earliest known Schömbs emigrants, and came at the same time as the group of Walhheimerhof emigrants previously discussed. Catherine was a Walheimerhof Schömbs. Her mother Susanna Schömbs (*1783, +1856) was born in Walheimerhof, the daughter of Nikolaus and Susanna Catharina Zang Schömbs. Two of her brothers also emigrated, Johann George Schönhardt (*1811 Mommenheim, +1869 Brownsville MN) and Jacob Schönhardt (*1824, +1890 Jo Davies County, IL). At least seven of Catharina's first cousins also emigrated as seen in the Walheimerhof Chapter.

Anthony and Barbara Schindler (*03.1848 Germany, +22.11.1911 Cheektowaga NY) were married in Buffalo on 2 July 1867. The 1900 Census has Anthony being born in Oct 1843. It agrees with the birth month/year for Barbara and the year of their marriage. The family lived at 34 Cypress Street in Buffalo and owned their home.[3] Anthony was a machine hand in a lumber mill. He had been out of work 6 weeks during the prior year.

Mary Krost married a man by the name of Bertoli. This we know from oral history. In the 1910 Census there is a Mary Bertoli, wife of Louis J. Bertoli (*1876 OH), living in Cleveland OH. Mary was born in New York, as were her parents. The 1910 Census is very difficult to read. The 1930 Census is quite clear. Mary is enumerated on line 94. She was 61 years old, therefore born about 1869, again born in New York with parents born in New York. In all probability this is the correct Mary Krost, even though her mother was probably born in Germany.

In 1910 living next door to Louis and Mary on Gaylord Avenue were Angelo Bertoli and his daughter Lena (?).[2] Angelo, age 70 and a widow, was undoubtedly the father of Louis.

Louis Bertoli was born in Ohio from Italian immigrant parents. Louis was eight years younger than Mary, worked as a salesman, and they owned their home valued at $7,000 at 9515 Gaylord Avenue. The home was average value for the neighborhood.[1]/b>
