- Hermann Behrend Schömbs was the only child of Hugo Karl Ludwig Schömbs (*1874, +1948) and his wife Paula Ulrich Schömbs (*1881, +1917). Hermann is a case of an emigrant, for whom the decision to emigrate was probably made by others. His mother, Paula, died in 1917 when Hermann was 14. The decision was made to send him to live with his aunt "Lutty", his mother's sister who happened to live in Groningen, The Netherlands. Hence, at age 14 he "emigrated" from Germany and lived the rest of his life as a Dutchman. Lutty and her husband "Ko" van t'Oever had no children of their own.

The second cousins meet in the Friesenheim Cemetery in 1999 as a part of the Familientreffen. - Hermann's career was as a representative for an electrical equipment company. He worked for them for several years in Australia, then returned to the Netherlands for the balance of his working life.
- Hermann was married in 1930 to Maartje Jacoba Gerritsen (*08.14.1904 Rotterdam, +08.09.95). They were married in Rotterdam where Maartje was born and raised. Hermann and Maartje had three children, all born in The Netherlands.
- In 1999 the Dutch Schömbs renewed contact with their relatives. Paul (*1942) and Anja (*1947) came to the first Schömbs Familientreffen in Herrnsheim, Germany in 1999. A year earlier none of the second cousins shown in the picture below knew of the others.

- Hugo moved to Canada in the 1950's and changed the spelling of his name to Schoembs. Hugo married Iris Mary Iwaskiw (*1941) in Montreal in 1964. They have three daughters, most of whom now live in the United States.
