Return to Zacharias, father of Hermann Schömbs

Hermann Schömbs (1666-1718)2.1

Overview:
Hermann Stammbaum

Hermann Schömbs was born in 1666. His birthplace is not known, as we do not know where the Schömbs family lived prior to moving to Undenheim. The birthyear is learned from the entry (Churchbook Undenheim 15 May 1718) that he was 52 years old when he died in 1718.

In 1695 Hermann Schömbs became mayor of Undenheim. He was the first Schömbs to hold the position of mayor and he was the first Catholic mayor since the Reformation. In the literature of Undenheim by the researcher Dr. Curschmann, it is mentioned many times of Hermann performing his official duties. For example, in the year 1706 Herman borrowed money which many years later led to a dispute. He received the amount of 64 Gulden in that year. The lender was the so-called "Reformierte Almosen", or Reformed Charities. But Hermann was not a reformed Catholic. Three Gulden and 12 Kreutzer was due annually as interest, but it was never received by the Reformed, apparently. It turned out that Hermann had made the payments to a Catholic priest, but they had not been passed along to the Reformierte Almosen. In 1718 in the year of his death Hermann paid the money back to the Charity.

I (Reinhold) in 2011 discovered the fragment of the gravestone of Hermann Schömbs in the cultural museum in Undenheim. In 1954 the stone had been found in a school basement but not identified until some time later by the local historian Walter Schwamb and made available to the public. The existence of this ancient stone is a great treasure of our family history.
The inscription on the gravestone sates:

Hermann Schömbs married Elisabetha. Her maiden name is not known, nor is their wedding date. In his second marriage Hermann wed Anna Margaretha (*1670, +21.04.1744 Undenheim), a Lutheran. It is not known at this time which children were the products of which wives. The first two children were born in Undenheim, the third in Gabsheim in 1697. Perhaps Hermann lived for a short time in Gabsheim, a few kilometers from Undenheim. In the Family Tree all the children are included under Anna Margaretha until more is known.

Maria Eva Schömbs (*um 1694 Undenheim)2.1.1
Previously found was a record indicating a birthdate for Maria Eva of 20.02.1701. However the Undenheim historian Walter Schwamb says the birthdate is about 1694, which is now used here.

Maria Margarete Schömbs (*um 1695 Undenheim)2.1.2
Similarly one record suggests a birthdate of 09.09.1703. However Walter Schwamb says the birthdate is about 1695, which is used here.

They lived first at Unterstraße 134, later at Oppenheimer Straße 158.

Children: (12)
12.1.... Anna Katharina Schömbs (*28.01.1794 Undenheim, +10.02.1794)
12.2.... Johann Georg Schömbs (*09.12.1795 Undenheim, +20.10.1834 Eimsheim and the church record)
Godfather was Georg Wirth, schoolmaster and court scribe.
Johann Georg Schömbs heiratete am 24.05.1825 in Weinolsheim Catharina Rauschkolb.

It is interesting to note in the civil records in Weinolsheim/Eimsheim that the family name is spelled "Schembs". In contrast the church records in these towns during this same period spelled the name "Schems", "Schoembs" and "Schömbs".

Kinder: (4)
4.1....Mathäus Schömbs (*1.10.1818 Eimsheim)
Mathäus Schömbs has been a challenging person to research. His birth does not appear in the Eimsheim/Weinolsheim churchbook. There is, however, the civil record of his birth in 1818. If one looks at the transcription and then the English summary of the record, it states that Mathäus was born out of wedlock and does not name the father, only Catharina Rauschkolb, the mother.

Then six years later Catharina gave birth to Caspar Schömbs (*1824), also out of wedlock. Still one year later in 1825 Catharina Rauschkolb and Johann Georg Schömbs (*1795) were married. It is not certain that Johann Georg Schömbs (*1795) is the natural father of Mathäus (*1818).

COMMENT: From the Webseite www.kleinhanss-web.de of Arno Kleinhanß we have the parents of Mathäus (*~1828) als Matthaus Schembs/Schömbs und Katharina Rauschkolb. We have been unable to contact Arno to ask the source of this information.

Mathäus Schömbs married (Heiratsregister) on 08.02.1849 in Weinolsheim/Eimsheim Margaretha Kleinhans (*30.10.1825 Eimsheim), the daughter of Johann Georg Kleinhans and Clara Gruber.

Kinder: (6)
6.1....Georg Schömbs (*02.02.1850 Eimsheim and 02.02.1850, +after 1853)
6.2....Anna Maria Schömbs (*08.06.1852 Weinolsheim)

In 1853 Mathäus, Margaretha and their two children sailed to Amerika aboard the American bark (ship) Sea Duck. Their names are entered in the passenger list for the Sea Duck. With the Schömbs family was a Kleinhanß family of nine. It is fairly certain that Elisabeth (*1815) and Franz (*1831) on the passenger list were half-siblings of Margaretha. Margaretha's father Georg Kleinhanß married three times and had children from all three wives.

2.1....Georg Schömbs (*03.04.1859 Spiesheim translation, +28.05.1940 Buffalo NY USA)
In 2013 we thought we had solved the riddle of Georg Schömbs who emigrated and settled in Buffalo, New York. The original 2013 information had come from a website named mundia.com. But the website no longer existed and it was not possible to contact the contributor of the information.

Now in 2024 thanks to the research of Amanda Marx, and supplemented by Reinhold Schembs, the history has been re-written. Follow the Link below about the 1882 emigrant to Buffalo NY for the full story

Note that the birthdate as given on the translated certificate of his birth matches exactly the birthdate given on his death certificate.

But also note that the death certificate, the information for which was supposedly provided by his wife Elizabeth, was erroneous in other places: the name of Georg's father; and the name of his mother "unknown". But as is told in the follow on story in the Link below, Georg wanted to leave his German memories behind. He never talked to his family, including apparently his wife, about the old country. The only thing he brought with himself was his birthdate.

Georg met and married Elizabeth Blank (*23.11.1867 Buffalo, +18.07.1953 Buffalo), the daughter of Prussian emigrants who had previously settled in Buffalo.

Franz Jr. first studied graphics and writing after the visit of his high school (Gymnasium) to the Meisterschule (school of masters) in Kaiserslautern. He followed a study of photographic art in Karlsruhe with a photographer. Foreign travels led him to the art centers of Rotterdam, Paris, Rome, Naples, Florence and Venice. The impressions he experienced influenced him greatly. Over the next thirty years he painted much in the abstract.

He spent much intense time with the effects and possibilities of pure color usage in the paintings and with their harmony (interplay of time, area and color). With his ideas and visions he was ahead of his time. He later named his art theory "Ergonik." In the company of many experimental friends, he had the courage to pursue new ways of artistic work including the use of film as a medium. By 1937 he was experimenting with the structure of space and time, and therefore motion. These considerations led first to animation frames and to process these into experimental cartoons.

In 1943 he made his first film "Geburt des Lichts" (Birth of the Light). For this and his second film "Opuscula" he developed costly reception equipment. The so-called optical Integrator enabled multiple exposures to be layered on top of one another into a picture strip. The films showed colored movement compositions in the abstract by Franz Schömbs.

Possibly Franz Schömbs inherited his artistic talents from his mother. Stories are told of her performances as a stage actress.

His studio was destroyed in 1943 in an allied bombing attack, with his many designs and materials. In 1946 he received a new studio in the Mannheimer Schloß (Mannheim Palace), which had also been a casualty of bombings. Since it was barely heated, the paint would freeze in the brush as he painted. Then in 1948 he moved to new quarters in the uppermost floor of the Mannheim Observatory where he continued his work. It was here that his two daughters were born.

With 1962, and after the color film "Den einsamen allen", Franz Schömbs directed his artistic interests into dance-like studies, silhouettes and abstract motion themes involving rhythm, color compositions and form variations.

Franz Schömbs was acknowledged by the art profession for his thought provoking abstract creations and invention of the painted art film. In 1947 he held a showing in Mannheim: "Das Publikum war verblüfft und verstand nichts". The public, however, was perplexed and understood nothing of his work. Most people undoubtedly had no prior experience in seeing and dealing with abstract art and film.

Also in the Bavarian city of Munich, where Franz Schömbs presented a Premier of "Geburt des Lichts," the public responded with catcalls and shock even though the film was to receive critical praise -- "Besonders wertvoll" or "especially valuable." His work in Munich as painter and film-maker continued into 1964/1965 with involvement in the filming of the "Triadischen Balletts" by Oskar Schlemmer. In 1971 his work was recognized and appreciated in a big showing at the Völkerkundemuseum (ethnology museum) in Munich.

The cinematic works of Franz Schömbs are today a part of the collections of the German film-museum in Frankfurt. A ceremony honoring and commemorating his work took place in 1996 at the Deutschen Filmmuseum (German Film Museum). The last showing of his works was in 1999 in his hometown of Mannheim.

In 2009 an event was held in the Frankfurt Film Museum celebrating Franz on his 100th birthday. On Wikipedia is a detailed article about Franz Schömbs.

Dr. Wolfgang Schömbs
Dr. Wolfgang Schömbs married Elfriede " Elfi" Simon (*1938). He lives in Bad Harzburg and belongs to the "artistic" branch of the family, a special group!

Dr. Wolfgang Schömbs first completed a banking degree, studying economics, psychology and the law. He left his career as a business professional to, in a sense, follow in the footsteps of his father, grandfather and great-grandfather -- into a career in management training first at the Akademie für Führungskräfte der Wirtschaft in Bad Harzburg, and later with his own Institut specializing in the area of coping with stress, communications, conflict resolution and creativity. He has written books on these subjects, for example "Entspannt konzentriert - Stressbewältigung und Leistung - Zen im Alltag" (Relaxed concentration - Stress management and performance - Zen in the daily life). He also has produced casettes and CDs on related topics.

His actual dream since youth had been in music, however. He wanted to be artistically active, but received no support from his father who felt he should pursue a career which could give him financial stability. Despite his professional career, he pursued his hobby of classical and jazz piano. He was largely self-taught in music, but did become a student of jazz-pianist Jasper van Hoft, Jacques Loussier, and others. He integrates the music into his seminars, composes, produces, gives public concerts and initiated the series "Jazz im Schloss" (Jazz in the Castle) in Bad Harzburg.

His special interest is in the synthesis of Classical and Jazz, as in "Play Bach." In music circles he has made a name for himself as "Dr. Jazz Trio", as pianist, arranger and composer, appearing in public concerts.

Today he concentrates his professional career in management training on a selected clientele, in order to fulfill his childhood dreams in music.

Johann's voyage across the Atlantic was aboard the ship Helvetia. He is listed on Line 7 of this page of the passenger list. His name is given as Johann "Schambe", age 15 from Hess (Hessen). Above Johann are listed the Wolff children on Lines 1-5. The Wolff parents, Jacob and Catharine, are listed at the bottom of the prior page. This enabled searching for information on the Wolff family which was located online. The Wolffs are not related to the Schömbs but from the Wolff family tree we know they came from the town of Albig in Germany. Albig is twelve kilometers north of Bermersheim. There is a high probability that the Wolffs and Schömbs knew each other and that Johann, age 15, was emigrating with friends of the family.

The transcription of the passenger list upon arrival in New York is the last record using his German given name of Johann. The records in the United States refer to him as John Schoembs. But no records have been found for his next six years. We believe, with a high level of confidence, that John Schoembs enlisted in the Union Army with the outbreak of the U.S. Civil War. He died in 1862 in the Battle of Port Republic, Rockingham County in the state of Virginia. He is buried in the Staunton National Cemetery in Staunton, Virginia. His name is inscribed at the base of the monument with his fellow solders who died.

It is believed that John did not marry. Searches of City Directories for the years of 1857 through 1861 of Cuyahoga County, Ohio, where he probably lived prior to enlisting turned up no record of John.

Zetto was three years younger than his late father-in-law. According to the Undenheim history book by Schwamb, Zetto took over the position of mayor following the death of Johann Peter Schömbs.

Schwamb also notes that the Zetto family had come from Italy and, like most Italians, were not of large stature. Anton was called "the little one" and "Antonichen (little Anton)". Zetto had little sense of humor. As an elected official he filed complaints against people for "despicable conduct against the Mayor".

A Tale of Two Emigrants

Jacob Sickinger (*1822) and 11.4 Johann Baptist Schömbs (*1826) (see below) were friends. Sickinger went on to marry Johann's older sister 11.3 Barbara (*1824) (see above). But before either Jacob or Johann married they decided to experience Amerika.

In 1849 Johann Baptist Schömbs emigrated from Deutschland. His voyage on the Cotton Planter (extract) took him to New York, arriving 23 August. Johann Baptist is included on the passenger list. Jacob Sickinger is not shown in the list. Perhaps he had emigrated earlier. In 1850 the two were working as miners in Shullsburg, Lafayette County, Wisconsin. Shullsburg was the third community organized in Wisconsin and originally settled by miners. Various minerals had been discovered in Shullsburg, including lead. It is in the far southwest corner of Wisconsin about 20 miles from the Mississippi River. Wisconsin had become the 30th state in the United States in 1848.

Soon after the 1850 Census Jacob and Johann Baptist returned to Deutschland where they both married, Jacob in 1851 to Barbara Schömbs and Johann Baptist three months later to Maria Anna Finger. Then in 1852 Jacob and Johann emigrated again, this time with their wives. They sailed on the Isaac Bell (passenger list). The abstract for Jacob gives the ships details.

We know that Jacob Sickinger and his wife Barbara moved on to Niagara Falls, NY. Yet Johann Baptist and his wife Anna Maria returned to Germany. We have no idea why the change of decision. Johann Baptist and Anna Maria lived out their lives in Germany, yet they set the precedent for their children.

11.4.....Johann Baptist Schömbs (*18.01.1826 Undenheim, +08.09.1906 Mainz)
"Johann Baptist Schambs" is named in the passenger list and transcription of the ship Cotton Planter in an 1849 voyage to Amerika. As noted in the box above we know that he went to Shullsburg, Wisconsin and worked as a miner. He lived with Jacob Sickinger (*1822) in 1850. They both returned to Germany. Johann Baptist was married 26.02.1852 in Bretzenheim to Maria Anna Finger (*09.01.1825 Bretzenheim).

Then in the Hessian State Archives exists a record of a Johann Baptist Schömbs from Undenheim, resident of Bretzenheim, who with his wife emigrated to Amerika in 1852. One needed to register to legally emigrate. We have now found the passenger list from the ship "Isaac Bell", showing that Johann Baptist and his wife Maria Anna emigrated together with Johann's sister Barbara (*1824) and her husband Jacob Sickinger (*1822).

But for reasons about which we can only speculate, Johann Baptist and Maria Anna did not remain in Amerika. Soon after their arrival in New York they returned to Deutschland where they lived the rest of their lives.

Johann Baptist was by profession a journeyman shoemaker.

It is worth giving an overview here of the various emigrations of this branch of the family:

Name Age Relationship Year
Johann Baptist Schömbs 23 self 1849
Barbara Schömbs Sickinger 27 Sister 1852
Johann Baptist with wife 26 self 1852
Johannes Schömbs 16 Son 1870
Anna Maria Schömbs 23 Daughter 1878

7.1.....Johannes Schömbs (*08.10.1853 Bretzenheim)
In the Hessian State Archives is an entry of the emigration of Johann Schömbs, age 16, to Amerika. From the record of his passage on the SS Berlin in 1870 is clear that he arrived in Baltimore, Maryland. While the spelling of his family name is "Schembs", this might be explained since this was the common spelling used for other branches of the family in Mainz/Bretzenheim. The Berlin arrived in Baltimore on 16 July 1870 with "557 Aliens (Immigrants) and 28 Citizens (U.S.)", per the manifest.

At this time we do hot have any documentation of his life in Amerika. But it was unusual for young men to emigrate alone at age 16.

7.2.....Anna Maria Schömbs (*13.12.1855 Bretzenheim, +about 1885 Suspension Bridge NY)
We first knew of the emigration of Anna Maria Schömbs from the 1880 U.S. Census for Suspension Bridge NY. She was living with her aunt Barbara Schömbs Barthan (*1824). Anna Maria was a dress maker and enumerated near the bottom of the page as "niece". The town of Suspension Bridge was incorporated into the town of Niagara Falls in about 1892. Consider the names interchangeable.
