 |
| Helene Schembs |
- Thanks to the oral history from Helene Schembs could the meaning of the nickname "Krampese" for this branch of the Schembs family be cleared up. The nickname goes back to the grandfather Johann Schembs III. His father, Johann Schembs I, a brother of our direct ancestor Peter Schembs II, was by profession a horseshoer. At their forge they also made rakes for farmers. In the vernacular, these three-tined rakes which were used for hoeing potatoes, were called "Krampen". The farmers would leave these tools with Johann to be rebuilt or repaired in his foundry. Since he was working with very poor customers, he would often not be paid in a timely manner. Johann III, when he was a boy, would go out for his father to try to collect the late payments from his customers. This was work, which was always taken care of on Sunday after church.
Again and again the child had to appear at the debtor in order to demand the money for repairing the "Krampen". And again and again he had to leave without the money. In contrast to the boy, the people liked it when he appeared and they gave him not a penny. At first they only mocked "There he is again asking for money for the Krampen". At some point, however, they only said "Look, there comes the Krampen again".
So originated the nickname, which remains until today in Laubenheim.

- Richard Schembs first learned in Nürnberg the profession of toolmaker for the railroad. Later he changed employers, going to work for the firm Opel in Rüsselsheim. At the end of the Second World War the way to his work was cut off. He lived in Rheinland-Pfalz, the French occupation zone. The factory in Rüsselsheim lay across the Rhine in Hessen, the American occupation zone. Without authorization the bridge across the Rhine could not be crossed. He had to find employment in Mainz. Fortunately he was able to get a job at Uhrmacher Schmitt on the Augustinerstraße, and learned the profession of clockmaking. After a time it was again possible for Germans to cross the Rhine for work, and Richard renewed his employment at Opel. But repairing clocks was a hobby for Richard for the rest of his life. Richard and Anna lived in Mainz-Laubenheim on the Ludwig-Marx-Straße.

- David Schembs married Katharina Greiner (1914-1996), Kostheim.
David Schembs was known in Laubenheim by the nickname "Käsfidchen". The name can be traced back to the first name David (abbreviation "vid") and put together with the grocery store and "cheese sale".
David was originally a locksmith. From this activity he also picked up the nickname "Käs-Schlosser" (cheese locksmith). Most likely, this name was given to him by his competitor locksmith Hoss, who was known in Laubenheim under the monaker "Fent". David completed his locksmith training in Nürnberg. Later he returned to Laubenheim. Before he opened a grocery store on Wilhelm-Leuchner-Straße, he led tour groups for a Jew named Marx.
The house, which was built in 1907, David bought from the duck-farmer Schmitt. In the 1930s he was mainly selling cheese in the Rheinhessen countryside from baskets. Through the years a large wholesale and grocerystore business developed from this once small-scale trading activity.

- The market area extended to Alzey, Worms and Kreuznach. The business developed so well that, during the 1960s, he opened a store in Weisenau at Moritzstraße 51, and another in Mainz-Kostheim at Burgstraße 45. With the emergence of the central markets, however, David slowly withdrew from the grocery store business. A small foodstore was continued by his wife.

Anna Schembs followed her husband, who had emigrated alone earlier. She was obviously homesick, however, because in a letter to her nephew Martin Schembs, who also wanted to emigrate, she advised him "stay in your hometown and nourish yourself honestly."

- It turns out that Maria and Mr. Kiefer did well in Amerika. They owned a large farm and were quite prosperous. But without any children, they willed their estate to their nephews and nieces in Germany and to the church. The documentation of their estate uses the spelling "Keifer".

Peter Schembs IV and Margaretha Heck |
- Peter Schembs IV. owned and managed vineyards. He lived in the family home on the present day Pfarrer Goedecker-Straße. After the death of Peter IV, the ownership of the home should have passed, on the basis of an agreement between his children, to Josefa Schembs and her husband Heinrich Neufurth. However the widow of Peter IV did not support this agreement, and since no will existed, the debt-free home was put up for auction. The house was acquired by Martin Binger/Frey.
The siblings of Peter Schembs IV and their descendants had the nickname "Ambosse" (anvil) in Laubenheim. The members of this branch are typically of large and strong builds. Some were blacksmiths by profession.

In World War II the residence of the family was met with a firebomb attack from Allied planes. There was much destruction to the home, with only the gable, a part of the outside masonry, and the cellar remaining. Helena Schembs tried to rescue some property and bring it into the cellar. As she was doing this the gable collapsed and buried Helena under it. Her husband, Johann, dug her out from the rubble with bare hands despite the flames. But she was badly burned and she passed away. In attempting to save Helena he also suffered severe burns, was carried to a hospital in a cart, and he too died from the injuries.

- Josefa Schembs was married 07.09.1929 to Heinrich Neufurth.
- Heinrich Neufurth came from the Taunus. He was a merchant by profession. In the 1930s he started his own business in Laubenheim as a wholesale grocer on Mainzer Straße (in the War "Straße der SA"). During the War not only was Heinrich drafted into the armed forces, but also his delivery truck, which was essential to his business. Josefa Schembs was able to hold the business together with great difficulty and by dramatically reducing its size. Sister Anna, whose husband was also off in the War, was allowed into the house. Anna also helped in the business. After the return of the soldiers from the War, Heinrich Neufurth unselfishly helped many other families and veterans with food. In 1948 he expanded the business again, acquiring trucks and delivering widely in the Rhinehessen and to the east to Hessen. Heinrich then brought his son Kurt Neufurth into the business, while Heinrich came to spend more of his time on his hobby of winegrowing. The business continued to prosper under Kurt, but none of the next generation wanted to carry on and the company was sold to the firm Deneke in Bruchköbel (Hessen).
