- Andreas Schömbs (1725-1796)1.
- Overview:

- Andreas Schömbs was born 06.04.1725 in Undenheim, the eighth and last child of Joh. Philipp Schömbs. Godfather was Andreas Zumrich from Gabsheim. Andreas was by profession a baker.
- Andreas came to Herrnsheim perhaps due to his first wife Apollonia (+07.06.1756 Herrnsheim). In the Churchbooks from Herrnsheim is recorded the birth of their first child Johann Georg "Schembs" (*02.01.1754 Herrnsheim). A year later Georg died at the age of 15 months. Apollonia passed away a year after that in 1756. Andreas five months later on 23.11.1756 in Herrnsheim married Christina Holtzemer (*1739, +31.03.1776 Herrnsheim). Following Christina's death Andreas Schömbs married for the third time. In 1777 he married Anna Maria Götz from Blödesheim. Andreas had children from all three marriages.
- Similar to his cousin Johann Heinrich Schömbs, who had already lived in Herrnsheim since 1738, Andreas Schömbs sired eleven children.
- The family name spelling was consistently recorded as "Schembs" by the Herrnsheim priest. Undoubtedly this was because the priest used the same spelling as had been attributed to Joh. Heinrich, Andreas' cousin. Future generations of both branches retained the Schembs spelling.

My Father, Heinrich Nesslang
by Franziska Nesslang Kuhn (*1896, +1978), composed in the Spring of 1969
[Translated by Dr. Fred F. Schembs Kuhn (*12.11.1928)]
My father, born 28.10.1848, was a tall and slender man. He had gray-blue eyes and wore a titian-red beard. His mother was 46 years old when she gave birth to him. He remained the only son. He often told stories, claiming that his great- grandfather was a Frenchmen who most likely came to the area during the French Revolutionary War and then remained there.
From his first marriage, father had seven children, three girls and four boys, two of them with blue-black hair and five were typical red-heads. - Understandably he was very sad when, after his wife's death, his seven children sat around the kitchen table with tear-filled sad eyes.
Thus he married less than a year later his cousin who herself was a widow with four children. Unfortunately, she passed away within two years after their marriage. - On 19 May 1895, father entered into his third marriage with our mother Anna Schembs (*28.03.1858), also widowed, who had two daughters: Christine and Katherine from her previous marriage to Franz Wollsiefer (*1832). And then Heinrich and Anna added Franziska and Gretel as their third set of children. I remember fondly my life with all these older and big siblings and also the household with its extra large pots and pans.
My brother Johann, also known as Jean, was a locksmith and he often told stories about the Zoo in Frankfurt while I listened attentively. August, the youngest, did gymnastics with us. We had to make ourselves very stiff and he lifted us up by our shoulders until we stood on our feet. - Franz was in charge of saying grace before dinner. He later inherited my fathers farming estate which was located next to the Castle of the Baron Von Heyle of Herrnsheim. Franz wanted lots of children yet he was not blessed with any.
Living near the Barons Von Heyle's was like living in a fairy tale. Great Duke Ernst Ludwig and Prinz Heinrich of Prussia were often guests at the castle. There were many concerts on the expansive terrace. In the Fall, they conducted hunting trips. Father was one of the local farmers who furnished the horse drawn carriages for transporting the hunting trophies back to the castle. Father was in charge of many of the activities. The goats which pulled small wagons for the Heyle's children during the summer months, as they were hay riding through their park, spent the winter months in the warm stables of our farm. Thus, my father was well known by the owners of the castle. When, at the time of the funeral for the elderly Baroness, the funeral procession passed by our house, Prinz Heinrich waved towards my father saying: "Hi Nesslang!". - I became friends with the daughter of the head gardener and we often played together in the big garden of the castle. This large park, which was beautifully manicured and maintained, was often made accessible to the public. So, I'll never forget my ice skating experiences on the park's frozen lake. Nowadays, the castle belongs to the City of Worms. The city decided to modify the castle into regular apartments, one of which, much to my joy, was occupied by my niece Hildegard (*16.01.1925) and her family Lottermann.
My brother Heinrich liked to talk about his sports clubs. He became a locksmith after an apprenticeship in town of Worms. He later worked for the German Railroad and married a girl from Bingerbrueck. The couple settled there and I remember fondly my visits to their home. My sisters Elise and Anna got married and lived in Hofheim/Ried. My mother took us there on frequent visits. I can still taste the red cabbage, which was famous for this region, together with their yummy bratwurst. Of course, the train trip across the Rhine River bridge was most fascinating for us girls. Sister Lehne married the farmer Jean Winkler of Herrnsheim. She was particularly kind to us and often gave us extra food during the WWII war years when I lived with my family Kuhn in Darmstadt. [My son Ferdinand (*1928) still remembers working on the Winkler Farm during his school holidays].
During the time when my father still owned his farming estate, he worked his farm of 60 Morgen with his sons and daughters of his first marriage. Since they didn't have agricultural machines in those days, this was a lot of hard and back breaking work. Many acres of wheat had to be harvested by scythe and acres of potatoes had to be hoed out by hand. Nevertheless, during the long winter months the rewarding physical resting period was savored by all. We also planted fields of cucumbers which our mother transported by ship down the Rhine River to the market of the city of Mainz. She didn't care much for the retail sale of our products. I also remember the many harvested sugar beets which we transported to the cities of Worms and Gross-Gerau, the latter the seat of a large sugar factory. My father was also an excellent handy man. During the winter months, he repaired wagons, ladders and other agricultural tools and made them work like new. Sitting on the bench around the centrally located big tiled stove, he smoked his pipe and watched as I was doing the household duties. We also had a big horse-drawn sled. Covered by red blankets and with hot water bottles under our feet, we rode, being pulled by our own black horse, far beyond the village of Leiselheim. These were beautiful and memorable sleigh rides. When I was still little, I was allowed to take over the reins of the horse when father or brother Franz were returning home from the fields.
Father was very patient, religious, and good-natured. He often said: "He who doesn't leave God, God will not leave". During pilgrimages to Gernsheim and Wallduern, he carried the banner of our town. On the other hand, he could be stern. Thus, I witnessed as a child of five years the following: Heinrich and Jean came home one day rather inebriated and they had a hard time observing proper manners. That's when father simply emptied a bucket of cold water over their heads. They gasped for air and quickly became quiet and manageable. - It so happened that the occasions of church festivals and domestic animal slaughtering feasts were always celebrated with copious amounts of beer or wine.
We also owned two mountain vineyards. How nice it was during the grape harvest season and the subsequent making of wine. Father cultivated his vineyard himself. With the clever use of a hose, the wine was 'skillfully' siphoned out of the big barrel into bottles, jugs, and steins for later or immediate consumption.
Father was also a skilled bowling fan. One time he won a Grandfather's clock. During one of the church festivities in Abenheim, we lost him from our sight. We asked people about "a tall man wearing a big white straw hat", and we finally found him at the local bowling alley.
All children from his first marriage had to address parents by the 'formal you' or by 'sir'. However, Gretel and I were allowed to use the 'familiar you' form. - Mother's daughters from her first marriage had to take care of the household as well as of 'us little ones'. Christine married someone in Herrnsheim and Katherine married someone in Ludwigshafen. During school holidays, we often visited them in the city. However, after a very short time, we got homesick. We felt very bored among those tall buildings of the cities. There, food had to be bought in stores and it wouldn't be managed as generously like we were used to at our home. - Thus we were glad when we could return to our house in the country.
With all the siblings gone we were pretty much alone at home. When, I was twelve years old, my fathers farming estate was turned over to my brother Franz. My parents leased out most of their remaining acreage and built a new house on Hoehenstrasse 96. In this house we were very happy children. My sister Gretel still lives in it now. - Our family still owned two fields with fruit trees, a vineyard, and a large potato field.
For the breezy yard of the house, father built, from old bicycles, a wind mill with red colored wings. It turned constantly, much to our entertainment, as we watched it from the kitchen window; also to enthused children of the neighborhood who watched it respectfully from the yard's gate. Father liked to take me along to the local pub for his Sunday evenings 'little' beer. or to the Café in Worms for his cup of coffee and a glass of chocolate milk for me. We also invited my little son Willi to come along. My parents had much fun with this little grandson. Father was very content that I was about the house for another eleven years after Willi's birth, also that I cooked for him the way he liked it. He was still able to experience our move to Darmstadt with my husband Ferdinand Kuhn. Three times he came to visit us there. He brought us pieces of furniture for our first apartment at Heidelberger Street 6. Often he added 10 bottles of his favorite wine, also home-made sausage from my sister Lehne Winkler. With these goodies, we celebrated together with uncle Fritz, Ferdinand's brother, and Tante Elle and had a wonderful evening meal. On his later visits with us at Beckstrasse 91, he liked to take a taxi from the railway station. However, he passed away too soon on 30.11.1928, only a few days after the birth of our son Ferdinand (*12.11.1928), and a little more than a year after my departure from Herrnsheim, at the age of 80 years, 1 month, and 2 days. |
My Mother, Anna Schembs Nesslang
by Franziska Nesslang Kuhn (*1896, +1978)
My mother, Anna Nesslang, nee Schembs, born 28 March 1858, was the daughter of the farmer Franz Schembs (*24.02.1831) in Herrnsheim. She had ten other siblings, all of whom had a notably good sense of humor.
My mother's first husband, a construction business owner in Herrnsheim, Mathias Franz Wollsiefer (*17.04.1832) passed away early. Thus, mother was a widow already at age 28 with two daughters Christine and Katharina. Seven years later, she entered her second marriage to my father, Heinrich Nesslang (*28.10.1848) who owned a reputable farming enterprise in Herrnsheim and who had been a widower himself with seven children. They had two additional daughters of their own, Franziska (*29.02.1896) and Margarete (*03.06.1899). - Three sets of children in this blended family were a big responsibility; I remember that often there were long and heated debates, especially when sons and daughters from first marriages, when reaching age 21, began claiming their respective inheritances.
Two siblings of my mother, Valentin and Christine, emigrated to America. Each one of them received a respective inheritance of 5,000 Mark. Aunt Christine wrote letters every Christmas. She owned a shoe store in Louisville, KY, We heard less from our uncle Valentin. Christine was, according to my father's stories, a very beautiful girl; she had blond hair and brown eyes.
My mother was a healthy and very pretty woman. She married at age 21 and weighed about 110 pounds. She was very outgoing in meeting other people, had a sound mind, had brown eyes and long black hair which she tied in the back and parted in the middle. This made her look very elegant. Her melodious and clear voice was passed on to my sister Gretel as well as to myself. - Thank you Mom.
[Note that Franziska (*1896) took professional singing lessons in the 1940's and subsequently gave many performances of classical and contemporary songs at family reunions, official functions, and in churches. She was often accompanied by her youngest son Franz (*1931)] |

Following the day’s festivities, which included a toast and cutting of the wedding cake on Zoom, the couple departed for Cape May, New Jersey, the seaside resort town where they spent their honeymoon.

- 13.9..Valentine "George" Schembs (*10.05.1866 Herrnsheim, +08.06.1917 AMERICA)
-
- Valentin Schembs emigrated to Amerika in about 1882, nine years after his sister Christina had done the same. He too was young at the time, about 16 years old, and appears to have emigrating alone. Although it is likely that he emigrated with friends. Valentine, upon arriving in Amerika, first went to Louisville, Kentucky, where his sister Christina (*1855) and uncle Philipp (*1839) had settled. He was the sponsor at his niece Edith's baptism in Louisville. On 18.03.1891 his name is spelled "Schemps" in his naturalization documentation, although he clearly signed his name Schembs.
 |
| Naturalization Document for Valentine Schembs, State of Kansas, 1891 |
- In later city directories his name took on various mis-spellings -- "Shemps" and "Shimps" for example. In the Herrnsheim Churchbook his given name is written as "Valentin", but in Amerika it is always written with "George". He apparently did not care for the name Valentin, and adopted the name George. The inscription on his gravestone leaves off the Valentin completely and only gives George. Yet the records at the cemetery list him as Valentine Schembs. Valentine George Schembs was married in 1890 to Mary Ann Trainer (*1856-1916), the daughter of English emigrants. Valentine was a butcher by profession, working for the Swift packing plant in Kansas City.

- Catharina Schembs (*21.05.1832 Herrnsheim)2.3.6/2
- Catharina Schembs was married on 27.11.1855 to Philipp Kaltenthaler (*1818 ).
- Elisabeth Schembs (*25.10.1834 Herrnsheim)2.3.6/3
- Elisabeth Schembs married on 26.11.1857 Carl Arnheiter (*1826, +09.12.1882 Offstein). We do not have the birth record for Elisabeth. The marriage record, however, clearly identifies her parents as Philipp and Theresia Beckerle Schembs. Carl (Carolus in Latin) was the son of Anton and Catharina Berschinger Arnheiter. the ceremony was in the Catholic Church in Herrnsheim.
Carl died in the village of Offstein, about 6 Km to the west of Worms. He was a school teacher in the village. They undoubtedly lived there as well.
Little information about Elisabeth and Carl has been found. Three of their children were discovered due to their immigration records and documentation in Amerika, not from German records. Their son Hans was found in a German record as a teacher in Bad Dürkheim, Pfalz.
The family name "Arnheiter" is not common. This makes genealogical research much easier, until the family name is mis-spelled in records and cannot be found. But the name is unusual in both Germany and Amerika. We believe we have found most of the descendants as a result.
As seen below, most of the German-born descendants of Elisabeth and Carl emigrated to Amerika. Click on this LINK to see the list of all the Emigrants.
The story of Elisabeth Schembs and Carl Arnheiter is interesting in the respect that their line almost disappeared. Elisabeth and Carl had 4 children. These four produced 14 grandchildren. These 14 grandchildren only produced 8 great-grandchildren, who then produced 2 great-great-grandchildren. But these 2 great-greats produced at least 7 great-great-great-grandchildren for Elisabeth and Carl. And the 7 have resulted in at least 12 great-great-great-great-grandchildren. The family will live on! It is possible, perhaps even likely, that William (*1934) and Karen (*1952) Arnheiter have added to these numbers.
- Children: (4)
- 4.1.....Theresa Arnheiter (*about 1860, +09.06.1912 Boston MA USA)
- We have no record of the birth of Theresa. Her death certificate confirms that she is the daughter of Elisabeth and Carl Arnheiter and gives her age at death of forty-nine years. But this would make her fifteen at the time of her marriage. Marriage this young was not common in Deutschland at the time. So about 1860 is a best guess, as she would then have been eighteen years old when she was married. Theresa was married 31 August 1878 to Friedrich "Fritz" Thomy (*09.12.1854 Frankenthal, Pfalz). The ceremony was at Sankt Dreifaltigkeit (Saint Trinity) Catholic Church in Frankenthal, Pfalz. Frankenthal is about 6 Km (4 miles) south of Worms. It apparently was the home of the Thomy family, as this was the church in which Friedrich was baptised.
- Children: (4)
- 4.1.....Unknown (*??)
- Nothing is known of this child.
- 4.2.....Catherine Thomy (*1.10.1881 Frankenthal, Pfalz)
- From her passport application in 1921 we can see the date of Catherine's birth. Also that she emigrated in 1901 which would have been with her parents.
 |
| Frederich Ernst Muehleder (*1877) |
- Catherine married Frederick Ernst Muehleder (*25.07.1877, +after 1940). Frederick had emigrated from Germany in 1904. They were married in about 1906 in Brooklyn. Frederick has been born Friedrich in Germany but appears to have changed the spelling of his given name soon after immigrating into Amerika.
- Children: (2)
- 2.1.....Frederick Ernest Muehleder (*10.01.1908 USA, +06.08.1908 Brooklyn NY)
- 2.2.....Frederick Wilhelm Karl Muehleder (*12.01.1912 Boston MA, +1971)
- Frederick Wilhelm married Catherine M.C. Carter (*1913 NY). We are aware of no children.
- 4.3.....Frederick Thomy (*10.10.1883 Frankenthal Pfalz, +1956)
- 4.4.....Eugene Thomy (*1886, +09.1969)
- Eugene and his brother Frederick both changed the spelling of their family name from Thomy to Thomey as seen in their emigrant chapter. They both married two times. Neither had children.
- We do not have the passenger list for their emigration. Based upon the 1910 United States Census, it is probable that Theresa and Fritz emigrated with their daughter Catherine and son Eugene, while son Frederick stayed in Germany and emigrated a year later. There are numerous records confirming Frederick's (*1883) emigration in 1902. Frederick (*1883) was eighteen when his parents emigrated and nineteen when he followed.

- 4.2.....Karl Arnheiter (*1866)
- Karl was first married to Susanna Hammerstein. The couple had at least five children, perhaps more. While no record has been located, Karl emigrated to Amerika before 1909 for in that year he was living in New York City. Susanna was living in Worms. They were probably divorced by this time.
- The five known children of Karl Arnheiter all emigrated, beginning in 1909. Rather than having separate Emigrant Chapters for each, they are combined in the Chapter for Karl (*1866). All five children emigrated alone (not with any of their siblings) and all at about the age of twenty.
- Children: (5)
- 5.1.....Elisabeth "Else" Arnheiter (*1892 Germany, +Amerika)
- Else emigrated in 1910 with her Uncle Anton (*1868). She later married Fritz "Fred" Tenscherz (*1883 Germany, +27.07.1935 Pulaski, Arkansas)
- 5.2.....Anton Arnheiter (*21.01.1893 Worms, +after 1940, Amerika)
- It is from the immigration record of Anton in February 1909 that we know his father was already in New York. The "Arrival Contact Name" is Karl Arnheiter, Father. Anton married twice. From his first marriage to Ruth Hiser (*1887, +1967) he had one child.
- Children: (1)
- 1.1.....Ruth Marcella Arnheiter (*17.04.1920 Indiana, +11.06.2015 East Germantown IN)

- 5.3.....Karl Arnheiter (*1894 Germany, +1975 Detroit MI)
- Karl was the third of his siblings to emigrate. He passed through Ellis Island on 23 September 1913. He did not marry.
- 5.4.....Mathilde Arnheiter (*30.11.1898 Germany, +April 1970 Little Rock, Arkansas)
- Mathilde was the fourth of the children to emigrate. She arrived in Amerika on 26 November 1923. Her Aunt Anni Pfaller was the contact person upon her arrival. Mathilde was 24 years old at the time and single. She did not marry.
- 5.5.....Johann "Hans" Arnheiter (*15.06.1900 Worms, +07.06.1983 Nassau Cty, New York)
- Hans was the last of the siblings to emigrate, arriving in New York in August 1924. At about age 30 Hans married a woman by the name of Anna (*1887 Schwetzingen Baden, +1982 Nassau NY). We are aware of no children.

- 2.1.....Johanna Arnheiter (*14.03.1895 Germany, +05.1972 New York)
- Johanna was born six months before her father emigrated in 1895. She and her mother stayed in Germany, emigrating the following year. In October 1924 Johanna and Wenzell Wajerski (*28.09.1894 Schmentau Prussia (today Poland), +01.1966 Brooklyn NY) were married in Manhattan. They were both 29 years old.

- Pearl passed away at the age of four months.
- 2.2.....Karl Anton Arnheiter (*11.05.1903 Manhattan NY, +13.05.1903 Manhattan NY)
- 4.4.....Hans Arnheiter (*~1870-1875)
- While Hans' birth date and location are not known, the birth years of his kids suggests he was the youngest child of Carl and Elisabeth Schembs Arnheiter, born about 1870-1875. Almost everything we know of Hans and his wife Katharina comes from the American records of their children.
Hans, the fourth child of Elisabeth and Carl Arnheiter (*1826), did not emigrate. He married Katharina Wengert. In fact their existence is pieced together from the stories of their children, all four of whom emigrated.
We know Hans (*1870-1875) was the son of Carl and Elisabeth Schembs Arnheiter from the immigration records of their children. The records reference the other children of Carl and Elisabeth as their aunts and uncles.
- Children: (4)
- 4.1.....Eugenie Arnheiter (16.03.1901 Bad Dürkheim, +07.1979 Europe)
-
Eugenie and Johannes "John" Cera (*27.03.1892 Linden, Hannover Germany, +05.07.1953 New York) married in Germany. She was processed through the immigration station at Ellis Island in New York on 3 March 1923 from the ship SS George Washington. Johannes Cera followed Eugenie in emigrating two months after her, but on the same vessel.
- Children: (1)
- 1.1.....John Charles Cera (*3.8.1924, +22.11.1953)
- At the time of his enlistment in the U.S. Army on 23 March 1943 John Jr. was nineteen years old and single.
- 4.2.....Armin Arnheiter (*07.07.1902 Bad Dürkheim, +10.1968 Europe)
- Armin immigrated on 11 May 1923 at Ellis Island aboard the ship George Washington. He was 20 years old and single. But he emigrated with his brother-in-law Johannes Cera, age 31, husband of Eugenie. There is a death record for Armin stating that he passed away in Europe in 1968. Perhaps this is correct.
- 4.3.....Elisabeth Arnheiter (*1904 Bad Dürkheim, +after 1940)
- Elisabeth emigrated to New York in 1922 aboard the ship America. In 1928 she married Kurt Bernatz (*09.05.1902 Bad Dürkheim, +26.04.1970 Dade County FL) in Manhattan NY in 1928.
Kurt immigrated through Ellis Island in 1925 from the ship George Washington.
In the FL Death Records is a Johanna N.N. Bernatz (*1908, +1972 Dade County FL). It is likely she was a second wife of Kurt Bernatz.
- 4.4.....Hans Siegried Arnheiter (*18.05.1908, +4.01.1992)
- Hans Siegfried emigrated from Germany in 1928 at the age of twenty. Fifteen years later he was in the U.S. Army in World War II. His enlistment papers identify him as single and living on Long Island. Sometime during or after the War Hans Siegfried married a woman by the name of Helen (*20.07.1907, +1.08.1962).
Following Helen's death Hans then married for the second time. His new wife's name was Emma Gairing Sieling (*1909, +2002). It was a second marriage for each of them. Emma's first husband was Friedrich Sieling (+1959).
- Children: (2) From the marriage with Helen
- 2.1.....William Arnheiter (*17.08.1934 USA, +8.07.2007 Tannersville NJ)
