Return to Zacharias, Father of Theodor Schömbs (*1684)

Theodor Schömbs (1684-1733)2.4

Overview:
Theodor Stammbaum

Theodor Schömbs was born in 1684. His birthplace is unknown. His birthyear we can deduce from his age of "49" in the death record (Katholischen Kirchenbuch Gabsheim 15.05.1718). (jds Note: There appears to be an error here. He probably died when he was 49, which would have made his death year 1733 as shown above, not 1718 as Reinhold indicates as the date of the Churchbook entry. In this way the children shown below were born to Theodor.)

Theodor Schömbs was the fourth child of Zacharias Schömbs. He was married on 19.06.1714 in Gabsheim to Maria Barbara Ludwig (*1698). Witnesses were Johann Adam Heiser and Philipp Zacharias from Undenheim. After the death of Theodor in 1733, Maria Barbara married again. Her second marriage was on 26.01.1734 to Johann Nikolaus Breivogel from Gabsheim.

Johann Adam Schömbs emigrated with his family in 1766 to Hungary. In the listing of emigrants to southeast Europe in the 18th century by Stefan Stader, 1978, he lists "Schems, Joh.Adam, Gabsheim" with the settlement goal (destination) of "1766, Banat". Emigrants to Hungary and Southeastern Europe / Siebenbürgen became known, after the first settlers, as "Donauschwaben" or Donau Swabians (Southern Germans), even though the majority of the settlers were from Western and Southwestern Germany. Very difficult economic and social conditions were the main reasons for these emigrations.

Note that this was 60 years before the first known Schömbs emigrant to the New World, Thomas Schembs (*1770 Gundheim) who emigrated to Brazil.

The peak of the emigrations to Hungary lay between 1764 and 1771. They followed especially bad famines and long hard winters with the resulting poor harvests. In contrast to Germany, the areas of Eastern Europe were thinly populated, so that settlement and development of these regions was pursued by the aristocracy and kings. The emigrants were given more personal freedom, in some years including relief from taxes and certain other obligations. People were recruited to emigrate to Eastern Europe through advertisements in South and Southwest Germany. Most people did not emigrate alone during this period, but rather emigrated with their families and other families. This was the case with Johann Adam Schems and his family. From the research work by Kallbrunner: Quellen zur Deutschen Siedlungsgeschichte in Südosteuropa, S. 64 it is documented that Johann Adam together with three other Gabsheim parties emigrated, namely "Simon, Conrad Hart und Christoph Thill". Their hometown Gabsheim is indicated as "aus dem Talbergischen".

From Southwestern Germany their trip went first to the Donau (Danube). Mainly from Ulm, they would go down the Donau by boat to Wien (Vienna). At Wien they would be recorded in the registry of emigrants ("Registrierung der Auswanderer") and be issued a "colonist permit" (Kolonistenpaß). From Wien they would continue then by boat until they reached their destination. Presumably Johann Adam Schems did not settle in an already existing place, but rather in a newly settled area in 1766 in the Banat.

Nothing is known about their further destiny. Traces of the family in this region have not been found. It is therefore possibly that the family moved away to still another destination at some time. With this comes a recently developed theory, that they continued on to Russia (the Caucasus Region) and are the ancestors of the "Schems" family which emigrated back to Germany from the Caucasus in the 20th Century. Perhaps this family are the descendants of Johann Adam Schömbs.
