"From Where Did Zacharias Schömbs Come?       The Netherlands?"

The first evidence of Zacharias Schömbs in Undenheim is from the Protocol Book of St. Albans when in 1691 it was recorded that Zacharias and a Mathes Henn were installed as the Hofmänner of St. Albans-Hof, one of the large farms in the region of the St. Martins Cathedral in Mainz which kept the very large staff of the Cathedral fed. The reference in the Protocol Book is that Zacharias and Mathes Henn had come from Stetten, a village about 18 km (12 miles) to the south of Undenheim. With the single exception of the Protocol Book mentioned above, records had not been found of a Schömbs family in Stetten. But this could be because all records were destroyed in The Thirty Years War (1618-1648). Or in one of the many wars since.

In about 2020 an American cousins told us Zacharias had been born and raised in The Netherlands. But he refused to show us any documentation or even to tell us what he had found, other than that the family name had been Schombergs. It sounds strange. And it was.

Since this Netherlands idea had been raised Reinhold Schembs, who has done most of the research on the far-back family history, spent considerable time delving into Netherlands historical records. The Netherlands records from the 17th Century have generally survived to this day, probably because The Netherlands was never a major aggresor in the various wars since and has never been heavily bombed.

After considerable research Reinhold concluded there is no evidence we can find supporting the idea that Zacharias Schömbs (1645-1707), our forefather from Undenheim, came from The Netherlands. Reinhold found only one person, a Sacharias Schomberg/Schombart, born in approximately 1630, who might have been a possibility. Below is the analysis. After Reinhold finished his research Monika Schoembs (Nürnberg) and Jim Schembs (Phoenix AZ USA) each separately went through a similar exercise. We both agreed that Reinhold’s conclusion was correct.

But first, here is the shorthand that I will use: In the discussion our forefather Zacharias Schömbs from Undenheim will be called Zacharias (U). The one Dutchman that was found will be Sacharias (N, for Netherlands). Sacharias (N), in the Netherlands documents is recorded with the given names Sacharias and Zacharias, and the family names Schomburg, Schombert, and Schombart, among others. These spelling variations are common in historical records from the time and neither prove nor disprove the connection we are trying to make. Also, if Sacharias (N) emigrated to Undenheim, the spelling of his family name could have changed to Schömbs.

All the records of Zacharias (U) after 1691 are from the churchbook of Mariä Himmelfahrt, the Catholic church in Undenheim. Zacharias (U) and his wife Anna Magdalena had four children, all sons. The birth years for the four are derived from their death records, as we do not have birth records nor are sure where they were born. But presumably they were born in Stetten.

Below is a table of the various relevant historical events. The first two Columns on the left deal with Zacharias (U). The two columns on the right deal with Sacharias (N).

Comparing Events in the Lives of Zacharias (U) and Sacharias (N)

Zacharias (U)   Sacharias (N)
Documents/Events in Germany   Documents/Events in The Netherlands
Year Event   Year Event
~1645 Zacharias (U) BORN, based upon his death record in 1707.
1662 Sacharias (N) SCHOMBURG MARRIES Magdalena Pieters
1662 Sacharias (N) MARRIES Magdalena - original document
1664 Sacharias (N) SCHOMBERT MARRIES Marta Hendrick Ven Der Kort
This record shows that this is the same Sacharias. At the top, after his name, it says "Eerdere vrouw: Pieters,Magdalena" which translates to "former wife Magdalena Pieters".
1664 Sacharias (N) MARRIES Marta Hendrick - FHL transcription
      1665 Son SACHARIAS "II" BORN
      1665 Son SACHARIAS "II" BAPTISED
~1666 Zacharias (U) MARRIES Anna Magdalena (*1646, +1716)
~1666 Son HERMANN (1666-1718) BORN, based upon Churchbuch entry of his death in 1718.
      1667 Son HENDRICUS BORN
      1669 Daughter CATHARINA BORN
      1671 Daughter JANNITIE BORN
~1672 Son JOHANN PHILLIP (1672-1736) BORN, based upon Churchbuch entry of his death in 1736
      1673 Daughter ANNA CORNELIA BORN
~1674 Son JOH. HEINRICH (1674-1743) BORN, based upon Churchbuch entry of his death in 1743
      1675 Son JACOB BORN
Van Der Kort added to mother's name
      1678 Daughter MARTINA BORN
      1678 SACHARIAS (N) SCHOMBERT DIES
This in all probability is the father Sacharias, not the son Sacharias II. The father would have been about 35 years old, the son 13.
~1684 Son THEODOR (1684-1733) BORN, based upon Churchbuch entry of his death in 1733
1686 Son SACHARIAS SCHOMBERT enters the Dutch military.
This must be Sacharias II, who would have been 21 years old at the time. The father, if still alive, would have been at least 43 with seven children in the home, six of them ranging from 8 to 19 years.
1690 Son Zacharias Schombert Ship's Pay Record
1690 Son SACHARIAS DIES in Asia
1691 First documented mention of Zacharias "Schimpfs", then later "Schemes" and finally "Schömbs". This was from the protocol Buch of St. Alban, declaring that the Hof was being turned over to Zacharias Schimpfs and Mathes Henn from Stetten/Alzey to manage.
1695 Hermann (*1666) becomes Bürgermeister of Undenheim
1705 Daughter JANNITIE MARRIES IN AMSTERDAM
1707 Zacharias (U) DIES

One can see there are no Zacharias (U) records, either in content or date, which correlate or match those of Sacharias (N).

• The 1678 death record for Sacharias (N) is prior to all the Undenheim records for Zacharias (U). Also the other Sacharias, the son, was deceased prior to 1691.

• The wives names do not match. Zacharias (U) was married to Anna Magdalena. The first wife of Sacharias (N) was Magdalena Pieters, but their marriage ended about a year later. He remarried a woman with the given name Marta.

• Sacharias (N) was the father of seven children, three sons and four daughters, all born in The Netherlands.

• There are no church records in Undenheim of any of the children of Sacharias (N). These records might have included marriages, births (of grandchildren) or deaths of their children. In all probability, if Sacharias (N) emigrated from The Netherlands to Undenheim to take over a large farming operation some, or all, of his children would have followed. The children of Sacharias (N) would have ranged in ages from 7 to 25 years. in 1691.

• There are no common given names of the children of Zacharias (U) and Sacharias (N). The given names for Zacharias (U)’s sons were Hermann, Johann Philipp, Johann Heinrich and Theodor. The given names for the sons of Sacharias (N) were Sacharias, Hendricus and Jacob. And no common birth years. While the sons of Zacharias (U) birthyears were derived from their death records and therefore might be off by a year or two, there are still no obvious matches.

Sacharias (N) did not emigrate to Undenheim and was not our forefather Zacharias (U)!
