The Story of Johann "Adam" Schembs

Johann's story is told in the following parts:

  • Johann "Adam" Schembs
  • Marriage in Deutschland
  • Emigration
  • First Ohio and Second Marriage
  • Then Buffalo, New York
  • Occupation
  • The Residences of Adam and Kate
  • Children of Adam and Kate
  • The Dispute with George Hagerer
  • Visits by Other Schömbs
  • Descendants of Adam Schembs

There is interesting information from multiple sources about the family. One source is that of the "Vorwerk & Wilson Family History" on the Web. There are several pages on the Vorwerk site involving the Buffalo Schembs. Information in this story from the Vorwerk site is footnoted. Three of the pages are accessible from the Footnotes section at the bottom of this page. And others from the first three.

"Adam" Schembs (*29.07.1842 Mainz/Laubenheim, +09.09.1920 [5] Lockport NY)

The Buffalo Schembs family is one of the few emigrant families with whom we have not yet made contact. There is a reason for that. Of the twelve children only six married. And the six only produced a total of four grandchildren. Hopefully in 2021 we will be successful.

"Adam" Schembs, as he was referred to in the 1900 Census, was born Johann Adam Schembs. But then in the 1905 Census he is "John A." Schembs.  It was very popular in 19th Century Germany to use the first name Johan (Johann, Johannes, etc.).  Therefore males so named typically went by their middle name.  Adam went by "Adam" in most of the documentation we have discovered.

The background of Adam Schembs is well documented.  Adam was the second of five children of Caspar Schembs (*1812, +1875) and Catharina Spies (*1815, +1855).  Adam was born 29 July 1842 in  Laubenheim, now a district of Mainz on the Rhine River west of Frankfurt.  He was 13 years old when his mother died.

For the family background of Johan Adam read the story of the Laubenheim Schembs by Clicking on the Link at the top of this page to trace his ancestry.

Marriage in Deutschland

We have two records indicating that Johann Adam married in Germany. The first is the marriage record of Johann Adam to Anna Maria Niesen on 29 May 1869 in Mainz. Then a 1872 reference in the "naturalization book" in Wiesbaden of the arrival of a seamstress Anna Nießen Schembs, wife of the tailor Johann Adam Schembs, on 2 Feb 1838 in Alf/Mosel. How their marriage ended is also not known.

Emigration

The year of Adam's emigration is believed to be 1872 [2].  Assuming 1872, Adam was 30 years old at the time of his emigration. It is not known whether Anna Maria emigrated with Adam. But since we have no records of her in Amerika, perhaps not.

Adam was the second cousin of Peter Joseph Schembs (*1837 Laubenheim) who emigrated from Laubenheim to Philadelphia in 1859, and the third cousin of Jacob Schembs (*1830 Laubenheim) who had emigrated from Laubenheim to Albany, New York in 1850.

Per the 1900 Census, he became a naturalized citizen of the United States. The best way to review Census information is to go to the original Census pages in Live Links section at the bottom of this page.

First Ohio and Second Marriage

Upon arriving in America, Adam may not have gone directly to Buffalo, but rather settled first in Cleveland, Ohio. On 31 January 1875 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County OH, Adam and Katherine "Kate" Hagerer (*10.1854 New York, +25.01.1907 Buffalo) were married. The ceremony was conducted by Justice of the Peace George Kolbe. Kate was the daughter of John and Christina Arnold Hagerer.[6] Adam then appears in the Cleveland Directories as follows: 795 Woodland Avenue, tailor 1875; 14 Scovill Avenue 1876; 581 St. Clair, tailor 1877; 125 Oregon, tailor 1879; and in 1880-81 at 68 Vermont, tailor.[5]

Their first four and perhaps five children were born in Ohio.

Then Buffalo, New York

They moved from Ohio to Buffalo in the 1881-1883 period, based upon the births of their later children. The first documentation we have found of them in Buffalo is the 1892 New York State Census.

The timing of their move to Buffalo is interesting in light of another Schömbs emigrant.  George Schoembs (*1859 Mainz/Bretzenheim) emigrated in 1883, settling in Buffalo.  It is most likely that Adam Schembs arrived in Buffalo before George Schoembs, but whether George came to Buffalo knowing of Adam is not clear. Bretzenheim and Laubenheim are about 5 Km (3 miles) apart.

The first record we have of the Schembs in Buffalo is the 1892 Census. In that year they had nine children living in the home, ages two to seventeen.

On Line 58 of the 1900 Census of Buffalo, Adam Schembs (*1842 Mainz/Laubenheim) is enumerated as living at 286 Maple Street with his wife "Kate Hagerer (*10.1854 New York, +abt 24.01.1907 Buffalo[4])" and nine children. Around the corner on Line 68 is Adam's son Adam Schembs (*01.1878 Ohio) living at 1041 Michigan Street. Living with Adam (*1878) is Adam's "mother" Caroline Schembs (*04.1840 New York). Caroline's marital status is unclear in the Census. Both Kate and Caroline were born in New York, the daughters of German immigrants. Adam (*1878) is the son of Adam (*1842) as seen in the 1892 Census.

The 1900 Census also reports how many children a woman had borne, and how many were living in 1900. Kate reported having had fourteen, with twelve still living. As seen below, we are aware of twelve children still living in 1900.

Occupation

Adam was a tailor by trade, a profession which he had begun prior to his emigration from Germany. His occupation is confirmed in the Census years of 1892, 1900, 1905 and 1910. He worked from his home.

The Residences of Adam and Kate

In 1900 the Schembs, with eight of their children, lived at 286 Maple Street, Buffalo.  It was a house which they rented. [2]  In 1905 they were at the same address.

By 1910 Kate had passed away. The family moved to a smaller residence at 248 High Street which they shared with the Henry Nahly family of five. Living with Adam were four of the children: Joseph, Bertha, Edward and Harry.

In his later years Adam moved to Lockport, a northern suburb of Buffalo in Niagara County.  He lived in the Odd Fellows Institute at age 77. [3]  In fact we also see from the Registration for the Draft of their son Adam J. Schembs that by September 1918 Adam Sr. was living at the Odd Fellows Home.

1900 Census

Children of Adam and Kate

Adam and Kate had one of the larger families of all the Schömbs immigrants.  The 1900 Census records that Kate had given birth to 14 children, 12 of whom were living at the time.  The twelve are accounted for below, including their years and places of birth, and whether they married and had children. In summary, Adam and Kate had twelve surviving children, six of whom married, and produced a total of only four grandchildren:

Of the twelve children, there is no record of six having married. We believe they did not.  The six marriages apparently resulted in four or five children.  Their fates and any possible descendants are still being researched.  It is apparent, however, that there are probably no living descendants with the surname Schembs.  Possibly, although unlikely, one was a child of a Schembs father.  The others were children of Schembs women whose family names would have changed through marriage.

The Dispute with George C. Hagerer

George C. Hagerer (*1853) was the brother of Kate Hagerer Schembs (*1854), Adam's wife. It is clear that the relationship between George C. and the Schembs went south. But it was not just the Schembs with whom George had a problem. In the lawsuit he, as the sole plaintiff, named Christina Hagerer; John F. Hagerer and Ernestina Hagerer (John's wife); Angelina Hagerer - THE WIFE OF THE PLAINTIFF!!; Jacob Hagerer and Emma Hagerer (Jacob's wife); Bertha Schoedel; Anna Ritter; Susannah A.; Andrew N. Hagerer and Gulda Hagerer (Andrew's wife); Dewe A. Hagerer; Gertrude L. Hagerer; and Joseph F. Hagerer. The complaint then goes on the name John Adam Schembs and every one of his children, along with their spouses and any Schembs who might be deceased or assignees or beneficiaries thereof.

The court action is reported in The Buffalo Express, March 19, 1907. It is a little difficult to read but if you are patient you can figure it all out. Scroll to the article in the lower right corner of the page and then zoom in. The notice begins with "Summons - State of New York -- County Court". The dispute deals with a piece of land located in the town of Hamberg, County of Erie. We know nothing more. We do not know the resolution of the litigation.

The John Hagerer family is enumerated in the Census of 1860, when George and Kate (Catherine) were children. In 1892 Adam and Kate Schembs lived in the 3rd Election District, Ward 12. George Hagerer and his wife Angeline were in the 3rd Election District, Ward 10, probably close to the Schembs. George is not found in the 1900 Census. In 1910 he and Angeline (they are still married) are boarding at 189 Oneida Street, about four miles SE from the former home of Adam and Kate.

George Hagerer (*1853) was a house painter. 12.2 Joseph Schembs (*1876) followed his uncle George into the profession.

Visits from Other Schömbs

In 1926 Otto (*1901, +1973) and Louise Schembs emigrated from Darmstadt to America.  Their initial stop in the United States was in Buffalo where they visited the Adam Schembs family.[1] Otto was the grand-nephew of Adam Schembs.  The grandfather of Otto (*1901) was Peter Josef Schembs (*1845, +1904), Adam's brother.

Otto and Louise Schembs then settled in New Jersey and are the subject of The New Jersey Schembs Chapter of The Auswanderer Schömbs.

Descendants of Adam Schembs
Children: (12)
12.1.....Albert Schembs (*01.05.1875 Cleveland OH, +01.07.1931 Hoboken NJ)
Based upon the New York Census years of 1892 and 1905 Albert was the oldest living child of John and Kate. He was enumerated as being 30 years old, a steam fitter, and living with his parents at 286 Maple.

Albert registered for the Army Draft in 1918. He was living in New York City at 141 East 15th Street and worked for Bacon and Smith as a steam fitter. He gave his brother Arthur on North Street in Buffalo as his nearest relative. On the back of the card Albert reported a disability: both his ankles had been broken six years before.

In 1930 Albert was a steam fitter at a plumbing company in Buffalo. He lived with sister Susie and her husband Edward Vrooman at 222 W. Tupper.

Otto Schembs (*1901, +1973) related to his son Roger (*1930, +2020) that there was a son Albert.  Albert apparently lived in New York City in his later years and did not marry.[1]

In 2017 an obituary was discovered from the Jersey Journal, a Jersey City NJ newspaper. We now know that Albert (he is named as Alfred in the obituary) returned to the New York City area soon after the 1930 Census and was living at 107 Bloomfield Street in Hoboken.

12.2.....Peter "Joseph" Schembs (*10.1876 Ohio, +29.06.1948)
Joseph was a painter by occupation, and living in the family home on Maple Street in 1900.  He reported that during 1899 he was out of work five months. [2]

While we do not have the record, it is clear that Joseph Schembs and Victoria Melancon (*04.1872, +10.06.1939 Buffalo) married. Victoria was baptised as Elisabeth Victorinam Melancon. The first indication of their relationship is the baptismal record of their daughter Antoinette in 1905. While the mother is given as Victoria Melancon in the baptismal record, she is then enumerated in the Census years of 1905, 1910, 1915, and 1925 as Victoria Schembs (*1872). Other members of the Melancon family in 1925 are on the prior page at the bottom. And Victoria is in the 1930 Census living with three of her siblings and her daughter. The 1905 Census was recorded nominally on 1 June 1905, three weeks after the birth of Antoinette.

Another confirmation of their marriage was in the obituary of Victoria's brother Eugene. Eugene's sister Victoria was referred to as Mrs. Joseph Schembs.

Victoria was the daughter of Olivier (*1827 St. Jacques-de-l'Achigan, Quebec, Canada, +10.10.1911 Buffalo) and Marie Antoinette Renaux Melancon. Oliver was an artist by profession, known for ornamental fresco painting. In fact many of the Melancon children were involved in artistic endeavors. It also is noted that Victoria's given name varies in the different records, mostly between Victoria and Victorine. For the purposes of this story we simply call her "Victoria".

Interestingly we have no record of Joseph and Victoria ever living together. It is likely that they were not yet married at the time of the birth of their daughter Antoinette in 1905 but probably married soon thereafter. In the 1905 Census for Adam Schembs (*1842), Joseph is not living with his family. At the same time, however, Victoria was living with her Melancon family. Perhaps Joseph and Victoria lived together briefly at some time thereafter.

In the 1910 Census, Joseph is enumerated as having been married for five years. He is living in his father's house without his wife Victoria. The Live Links section at the bottom of this page gives the reader full access to the original record for John Adam Schembs.

We located Joseph in the 1920 Census, but the copy was so poor that there was no meaningful information that could be read. The only later record we have of Joseph is in the 1930 Census. He is boarding in the home of Oliver and Katerine Vogt at 146 Johnson Street and is enumerated as single.

Victoria passed away in June 1939. She was buried in the United German and French Cemetery in Cheektowaga, Erie County NY. It is not known where Joseph was buried.

Children: (1)
1.1.....Maria "Antoinette" Schembs (*06.05.1905 Buffalo, +20.04.1989)
Antoinette was named for her Grandmother, Antoinette Melancon. She was baptised Maria Antoinette Schembs on 13 May 1905.

Antoinette lived with her mother Victoria at least through 1930, at which time Antoinette was single, and perhaps until her mother's death in 1939. She can be seen in the Census records for Victoria above. In 1940 Antoinette was single, thirty-four years old and living with her aunt Jennie Melancon. Her occupation was listed as a "novelty painter".

Antoinette was recorded in the 1953 Buffalo City Directory as living at 381 Eagle Street. Her vocation was given as "maid BSCo".

Howard and Antoinette Schembs Canfield
Saint Mary of the Assumption Cemetery

There is, however, on a genealogy website a family tree showing Antoinette as having married a Howard Canfield (*21.03.1902, + Jan 1981). We have not been able to contact the person posting this tree. Further research, however, does tend to support this. First, Howard is documented in his WWI Draft registration. He then appears in the Census in 1920 and 1930 as single and living with his widowed mother Minnie. Then in 1951 in the New York State Marriage Index appears Howard Canfield marrying in Buffalo a person whose famiy name begins with "SCHE". Unfortunately the Index only provides the first four letters of a marriage partner's name. And we cannot locate Antoinette marrying a man whose name starts with "CANF".

In 1951 Howard was forty-nine years old and Antoinette forty-six. It is highly unlikely that they had children.

Howard passed away in 1981 and was interred in the Saint Mary of the Assumption Cemetery in Lancaster, Erie County NY. Antoinette joined him eight years later. Note that the birth date (Geburtsdatum) for Antoinette on her SSDI death index is the same as the date (Ereignisdatum) on her birth record above.

Antoinette Schwarzott Van Houten (3.1 Antoinette Schwarzott (*1961) below) has a vague recollection of meeting a distant relative when she was a young girl. She believes this may have been Maria Antoinette Schembs but she is not sure.[7]

12.3.....Adam John Schembs (*14.01.1878, +20.05.1937)
Living at 1041 Michigan Street in the 1900 Census is Adam J. Schembs (*1878), the son of J. Adam (*1842). Adam, the son, is enumerated on Line 28.  His occupation was Iron Molder, with no time out of work the prior year. The Census also shows Caroline Schembs (*04.1840), his mother on Line 29, as living with Adam.  This is curious for multiple reasons.  The homes on Michigan Street and Maple are literally back to back.  Who is Caroline Schembs (*1840)? We really do not know. Caroline appears in no other records we have located.

On September 12, 1918 at age 40 Adam J. registered for military service as the United States was entering World War I - sides one and two. He was working as a clerk for the Buffalo, Rochester & Pittsburg Railroad and living at 154 S. Division Street in Buffalo. He gave his father as his nearest relative.

In 1920 Adam, single, continued to board at 154 South Division Street.  The house was managed by a Maggie Satchell, a Canadian.  In addition to Adam there were seven other single roomers, one 77 year old widower, and a family of three.  Adam's occupation was entered as a Checker on the Steam Railroad. In 1930 Adam was boarding in the house of Elizabeth Cutler along with several other men and women. Adam did not marry.

12.4.....Susie Schembs (*1880, +28.12.1955)
222 W. Tupper in 2020
Built in 1850, the home has three bedrooms and two baths in 1250 square feet
Her year of birth is given as 1879 in One World Tree. By the time of the 1900 Census Susie had moved out of the family home. [2]

In 1915 Susie appears as the Head of household living at 222 West Tupper Street in the New York state Census. Living with her are brothers Andrew (age 33, a "trimmer") and Arthur (29, cabinet maker) and sister Pearl (21, telephone operator). The address was a multiple family dwelling. Also living in the home were three people in the Lane family.

Five years later Susie is enumerated in the 1920 U.S. Census at 222 W. Tupper.  Living with Susie in 1920 were brothers Arthur and Edward and two boarders (single females in their twenties).  Susie is recorded as being single with no occupation. Four members of the Holey family also lived in the house. In all nine adults lived together in the house.

In 1922 Susie married Edward Whiting Vrooman (*17.01.1859 Ontario, Canada, +10.11.1936 Buffalo). Susie was 42 at the time of her marriage and her husband Edward twenty years older. They had no children. [1]

In 1930 living with Susie and Edward were Susie's brothers Albert, Arthur G., and Edward. All the Schembs brothers are enumerated in the Census as single. Three members of the Skinner family are renting space in the home. Edward Vrooman now owns the house valued at $5000 in the Census.

Following the death of Edward Vrooman in 1936 Susie remained in the house. By 1940 two of the Skinners were still renting space. Brother Arthur Schembs was the only sibling living with Susie.

12.5.....Frederick Schembs (*1881, +perhaps between 1944 and 1948)
We know of Frederick from the 1892 Census. He is not listed in the 1900 Census. He would have been 19. There are references in family obituaries, however, that in 1931 he was living in Syracuse NY and still living in 1937 and 1944. The obituary of Joseph in 1948 does not list Frederick as a surviving sibling.[4]

12.6.....Andrew Schembs (*25.09.1883, +about 25.05.1946)
At age 16, Andrew is shown in the 1900 Census as a plumber, living at home with his parents.

Andrew moved out of the family home and into the home at 222 W. Tupper being rented by his sister Susie by 1915. Also living there were his brother Arthur G. and sister Pearl. Andrew's occupation is entered as a "trimmer".

In 1920, Andrew was a 37 year old single man living in a rooming house with nine other men.  The address was 451 Elliott Street.  His occupation was factory worker. In 1930 Andrew was a boarder in a home at 117 E. Tupper Street. When the Census was transcribed it shows Andrew boarding at the home of William Trussett at 312 Elm Street. This is in error, which can be seen by looking at the original Census page in Live Links below. Andrew was single, forty-six years old, and employed in a shop painting automobiles.

Andrew did not marry. [1]

12.7.....Arthur George Schembs (*13.05.1886 Buffalo, +06.1971 Springville, Erie County NY)
As a 33 year old in 1920, Arthur lived with his sister Susie and brother Edward at 222 W. Tupper.  His occupation was News Agent at the Courier, probably the local newspaper. In the 1930 Census Arthur G. continued to live with his sister Susie Schembs Vrooman and her husband. He was a salesman, somehow dealing with automobiles. In 1940 Arthur was living with his widowed sister Susie.

Arthur passed away at age 85 in Springville, New York. (53)  Springville is located about thirty miles south of Buffalo. He had not married.

12.8.....Bertha C. Schembs (*24.05.1888, +27.07.1962)
Bertha in 1920 lived with and worked for the William Holmes family as a maid.  The address was 266 Richmond Avenue.  She was 31 at the time. Ten years later in 1930 she was living with William and Medora Gregory in the Village of Kenmore. She is enumerated as a sister-in-law of William, but it is not obvious how that could be.

Then in about 1933 Bertha, age about forty-five, married Hawley F. Scott (*1878, +1951). Hawley was a widower. His wife Ada Hudson Scott had passed away in 1931, leaving Hawley with their three children.

In the 1940 Census they lived at 98 Elmer Avenue, Buffalo. One of Hawley's sons from his former marriage lived with them. Hawley was a "dairy chemist" with one year of college education. He had worked every week in 1939 earning $2280 for the year, a very good income for the time. He probably worked for the City of Buffalo.

Hawley died in 1951 at the age of seventy-three. He was buried in the Oakwood Cemetery in East Aurora. Bertha joined him eleven years later.

12.9.....Edna Schembs (*06.1890 Buffalo, +14.07.1967 Buffalo)
We initially knew of Edna's adult life through oral family history.[1] But it is curious that she does not appear in the 1905 Census. Assuming the birthyear of 1890 she would have been 15 and would be expected to have been living with her parents. Edna may have been a housekeeper working for and living with another family in 1905.

Edna married John A. Barlow (*17.07.1886 Buffalo, +26.09.1948 Buffalo) from Buffalo.  They had two children, one of whom was named Eileen.[1] This information led to a successful search for the family on Mundial.com.

Edna and John Barlow are enumerated in the 1920 Census and again in 1925. In 1920 they were renting a home at 91 Locust Street in Buffalo, two blocks from Maple Street. John was driving truck. In 1925 he had advanced to a chauffeur for a private family. They moved to 742 Virginia, five blocks west of Main Street.

In 1930 Edna is not listed in the Census. John is enumerated as married.

2.1.....Marjorie Barlow(*18.12.1912 Buffalo, +05.07.1958)
Marjorie and Stanley Jarczyk (*12.04.1911 Poland, +12.1978) married. The ceremony was in 1948. Stanley had emigrated from Poland in about 1913.

2.2.....Eileen Barlow(*23.07.1914 Buffalo, +07.12.1987 Erie County NY)
Eileen married Michael Joseph Schwarzott (*02.11.1912 Buffalo, +21.11.1991).

By 1940 the Schwarzott family was well along in forming. There were five children ages one to seven. Edna, Eileen's mother, was living with the Schwarzott family, enumerated as forty-nine years old and married. Michael was a dye setter in a steel mill, having worked twelve weeks in 1939 and earned $294.

Michael and Eileen were fondly remembered by their grandchildren. Michael would do anything to help others. He regularly was transporting family and friends around town in his Mustang.[7] Eileen enjoyed playing cards. She was known to "stretch the rules" in order to win. [7]

Eileen passed away in 1987 and was buried in the Mount Calvary Cemetery in Cheektowaga. Michael followed her four years later and their son Mitchell in 2006.

In the Census of 1910 Edward was living in the family home. His occupation was given as "elevator boy" in a picture store.

In 1920, Edward lived on West Tupper Street with his sister Susie and brother Arthur.  Like Arthur, Edward was employed at the Courier.  His position is entered as Mail Clerk. He was 27 years old at the time. In the 1930 Census Edward is 38 years old, single, and still living with sister Susie.

Edward perhaps later married and had a daughter, Susan.[1]  Nothing is known of Susan, if in fact Edward did marry and Susan existed.

12.11.....Pearl Schembs (*16.05.1894, +15.12.1960)
In the 1915 Census Pearl is enumerated living with her sister Susie at 222 W. Tupper as well as brothers Andrew and Arthur. She is the only sister of Susie to our knowledge to have lived at 222 W. Tupper. Pearl married Harold S. Wiseman (*1895-?). [3]  In 1920, Pearl and Harold lived on Landon Street in Buffalo. Harold was a machinist [3].

In the 1930 Census Pearl and Harold are enumerated in Washington Township, Alameda County, CA. They were renting for $20 monthly on School Street. They had a son Harold Jr. Harold Sr. was a stock clerk at the salt works and Pearl an operator at the phone company.

Pearl appears in the 1940 U.S. Census. She is divorced. Pearl's younger brother Harry is living with Pearl and her son Harold Jr.

Harold K. was the only child of Pearl and Harold Sr. He served the U.S. Navy in World War II as a WT3.

In 2013 we learned of the marriage of Harold and Doris Amelia Keast (*14.08.1916 CA, +10.11.2000) from a Keast living in Portland OR. Hopefully we will receive more information about this couple and any possible offspring.

Harold and Doris are buried together in the Golden Gate National Cemetery, San Bruno CA.

12.12.....Harry Schembs (*08.04.1896 Buffalo, +10.10.1952 San Francisco CA)
Harry Schembs did not marry.[1]  He entered the U.S. Army in May 1918 and was a Private in World War I. In 1920 he lived with his sister Pearl and Harold Weisman on Landon Street in Buffalo. His occupation was given as Mailer at a newspaper. [3]

In 1940 Harry was living in Alameda County, California with his sister Pearl Wiseman and her son Harold K., age nineteen. Harry reports he was working as a laborer and that in 1935 he was living in Buffalo. In 1939 he earned $100 for the year per the Census.

Harry registered in 1942 for the Army draft with the entry of the United States into World War II. The registration is in San Francisco and he gives the Douglas Hotel at 756 Harrison Street as his place of residence. Harry is buried in the Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno, CA.

Harry is also mentioned in the California Death Index. But some of the information is in error, which is not unusual.
