The Story of Magdalena Binger Wetzel (*1838, +1905)

Magdalena Binger was born 26 June 1838 in Laubenheim, Germany. She was baptised the next day in the Catholic Church in Laubenheim. She was the daughter of Anton and Sophia Schembs Binger.

Magdalena and Jacob Wetzel (*1836 Pfaffen-Schwabenheim, +25.01.1911 QLD) were married 18 September 1863 in Laubenheim. Two months later on 7 November 1863 Magdalena and Jacob sailed on the ship "Johan Cesar" from Hamburg for Moreton-Bay, Australia, arriving in 1864. Moreton-Bay is in present day Brisbane. Their hometown (Residence) is entered as Pleitersheim, Hessen-Darmstadt. This is believed to be in error and the correct hometown should be Laubenheim, also in Hessen-Darmstadt but about 25 Km to the northeast of Pleitersheim. The reason we know the Magdalena Wetzel in the passenger list is Magdalena Binger Wetzel is that the subsequent records of the births of their children list her maiden name of Magdalena Binger. Also her death record identifies her mother and father.

Magdalena Binger Wetzel died 12 March 1905 in Brisbane.

It is interesting to look at the death certificate for Jacob Wetzel from 1911. It is in two parts -- first and second. It is helpful if you are able to open them in separate windows and then put them side by side.

The Election Rolls of Queensland during the first half of the Twentieth Century list a number of Mengels and undoubtedly Wetzels. All of them are towns in the general Brisbane area. Here are Mengel listings from 1925, 1928, 1943, 1954 and 1958. Most, if not all, of these Mengels are descended from Elizabeth Wetzel and Johann Konrad Mengel. Some of the information from the Rolls has been extracted and put into the presentation below. There are, however, numerous others who probably fit into the family but exactly where is not clear at this time. Establishing contact with the descendants of Magdalena Binger and Jacob Wetzel will fill in the holes.

We first know of Charles Frederick Mengel from his enlistment papers into the Austrian Imperial Force. Charles enlisted on 29 September 1916 into the 5th Unit of the 42nd Battalion. His place of birth is listed as Beenleigh, a town about 30 Km to the south of Brisbane. Prior to enlisting Charles was an upholsterer by trade. He had apprenticed for five years. During this period he had been a member of the Citizen Forces of the A.M.C for three years.

Charles and Lilian May Whitlock married. Later in life Charles Frederick appears in some of the Election Rolls. Specifically in 1954 (he would have been 58 years old) Charles lives in Manly on Gordon Parade. His profession is still upholsterer. It is from the 1954 Election Rolls that we can speculate on their family. They have at least two daughters who are living at or near home.
