Thanks for the history, I found it interesting.
-- I knew about the UC - Weehawken addr changes. but not the rest of it --
actually a lot of the addr and street chgs occurred when Union Hill and West
Hoboken became UC ca 1925 not as late as 1940s, but perhaps 1940 was when
the Guttenberg/WNY changes occurred........ where I lived on Summit Avenue
the house number changed from 469 to 2309 -- so house numbers were affected
too. The post office in UC had the conversions -- if you call they have the
reference buried in their cellar -- so you would have to prod them.
Someone -perhaps library should get a copy --or this copy, so it doesn't get
lost.

Also I lived in West New York and there are some errors with regards to the
street names. Jackson, Polk, Adams and I believe Madison are Streets not
Avenues. I lived on 62nd & Jackson St. so no doubt about that.

Lillian,

The original street names in Guttenberg date back to the early 1850's when
the Weehawken Land and Ferry Company platted and developed what was then
Cooper's Farm. In 1910 a renaming of all North Hudson streets northwards
from Union Hill took place. Later, in 1940, the numbered cross streets were
renumbered beginning from the southern boundary of Union City.

Most of the "original" Guttenberg streets underwent name changes over
the years as follows:

Ferry Road became 27th St, then 71st St (except it retained the Ferry
Road name down the hillside to the river).
Herman Ave became 26th St, then 70th St.
Franklin Ave became 25th St, then 69th St.
Hudson Ave became 24th St, then 68th St.

Hudson River Turnpike became River Road.
Boulevard East did not exist before about 1895.
First Street became Bellevue Ave.
Bulls Ferry Road became Park Ave.
Second St became Broadway.
Third St became Hudson Ave.
Fourth St became Palisade Ave.
Fifth St became Madison Ave.
Sixth St became Polk Ave.
Seventh St became Jackson Ave.
Eighth St became Adams Ave.
Dallytown Road became Hudson Blvd.

Bergenline Avenue is the only street to retain its identity over the
years, although originally it was known as Bergen Line Road.

John Clavin
